What the community has to say about Camino

Information about this business (1)

After working at Chez Panisse for over 20 years, Russell Moore opened this warm and rustic restaurant in the Grand Lake area of Oakland. Inspired by traditional home cooking in France, Italy and Spain most of the dishes served at the restaurant are cooked at the restaurant's prominent fireplace or wood burning oven. A small, decisive, daily changing menu reflects the seasons, the region and the...

Editorial reviews from the web (3)

Chef-owner Russell Moore cooked at Chez Panisse for two decades before opening this restaurant with co-owner Allison Hopelain that focuses on simple, seasonal, straightforward dishes cooked in an enormous, crackling camino (Italian for "fireplace"). The nightly changing menu has only three entrées—each cooked over its own open fire— including one vegetarian option such as eggplant gratin....

Chef/co-owner Russell Moore (ex Chez Panisse) is practically "out-Alice-ing" mentor Alice Waters at his "fairly simple" yet "utterly delicious" Cal-Med Oaklander where "almost everything" is cooked in a "huge fireplace", resulting in "marvelous flavors" and a "warm environment" to boot; though some are "underwhelmed" by service that "can be on or off" and communal "farm-table" seating, once...

Camino Restaurant Review

Russell Moore, a former chef at Chez Panisse, took an old furniture store and created the rustic-chic environment that is Camino. The menu is small and changes daily to feature what is fresh and in season. Dishes may include a radicchio and frisée salad with grilled pancetta and Parmesan, or grilled duck breast and crêpinette with sauerkraut, lentils and rosemary. Classic brunch dishes get the...

The food was amazing. The portions are on the small side so plan on having at least 2 courses. The service was a little slow, but we were not in a hurry so it wasn't a big deal. The one down side was the wine. We tried 3 different wines from the by the glass selection and they were all terrible. First was a sparkling wine that had an unpleasant funk. There was a cite du Rhone blanc that had a...

The coffee was a poor choice: glass cups with no handles, no refills, and rather bitter taste. Otherwise a lovely meal.

The food was good, not outstanding given other choices and the prices are kind of high with the inclusion of the service in the prices. Our meal was over $100 for two appetizers and a main and two glasses of wine/ all vegetarian, kind of steep. The waitstaff were very nice and helpful.

High quality food, great location, and great for brunch.

Perhaps best known for its weekend brunch, Grand Lake's Camino also has great dinner offerings as well. If you're looking to dine with a group, this eatery, with its long communal tables and generally cheerful vibe, would be a good place to pick. Brunch includes homemade doughnuts and duck fat roasted potatoes while for dinner, gorge on oven-baked oysters, grilled ling cod and lots more.
