What the community has to say about Butterfield 9

Information about this business (1)

The newest establishment on McPherson Square’s growing fine dining strip, Butterfield 9 has built a word-of-mouth reputation and is quickly becoming the preeminent destination for before and after theater diners. The three-level space portrays a casual elegance: The décor is upscale, but the vibe is far from stuffy. Unfortunately, like many trendy restaurants, the tables are packed closely...

Editorial reviews from the web (3)

Butterfield 9 (the name was inspired by a New York City telephone exchange in a Thin Man movie) is a shining example of how owner, chef and designer have pooled their talents for one hot place. It’s done up in subtle shades of the palest salmon and cozy gray and, amidst its minimalist décor, features almost-large-as-life black-and-white photographs of chic models. The setting aside, what...

This remains a favorite restaurant of my husband, and he eats at fine establishments nearly every day. On a splendid day in May, Jim selected a lunch entree of jumbo shrimp and softshell crab in a Niçoise sauce with baby arugula and young herb salad, and declared it delicious. Popular winter menu items have included an appetizer of chipotle marinated Eastern Shore grilled quail and a main...

Sophisticated scene and cuisine in Washington's theater district.

The Scene
Blonde wood and swanky banquettes set the sophisticated scene at Butterfield 9, located in the old Garfinkel's department store building near Metro Center. The service is...

Fodor's

Light-color wood paneling, gleaming white linen, and stunning black-and-white photographs make Butterfield 9 one of the most handsome restaurants in town. Chef Michael Harr's style of cooking glorifies complexity. The menu changes every two months and has included hits such as the Amish goat, a fillet of ostrich, and rabbit with persimmon and poached salsify. The almond cake with poached pear...

Upscale restaurant in downtown provides very elegant food in an equally elegant surrounding. Full of beautiful people but the service was friendly and not pretentious as one had been led to believe. Probably a better deal for lunch.

Good simple food Kudzu

I went to butterfield 9 for restaurant week so there was a limited menu. Everything was really good, but the gluten-free options were scarce and the chef was not all that willing to make changes.

We had dinner before theater, although not the pretheater menu. Service was knowledgeable and perfectly timed, we did not feel rushed but finished on schedule. The food was excellent...I recommend the elk! We're tourists, but if we were locals this would be a favorite spot. We'll be back.

My wife and I and a couple from Boston had dinner on Saturday night. While we had fun mocking some of the menu items and descriptions the consensus at the end of the evening was four thumbs up. From the friendly bar to the warm and comfortable dining room, all thoroughly enjoyed our meal, especially the scallops and lamb ragu. Service was attentive and paced perfectly and we spent another half...
