Butcher and Singer is not your ordinary run-of-the-mill steakhouse. An homage to old Hollywood, low lights and dark woods evoke a feeling reminiscent of a bygone era when women donned full red lips, men wore
a suit and tie and post-Prohibition liquor flowed freely.

The menu includes an array of perfectly charred steaks and chops, coldwater lobster and iconic dishes like Shrimp & Crab Louie....

You expect to see "Don Draper and Roger Sterling at the next table" at this "chic" Stephen Starr steakhouse in Rittenhouse, whose "oh-my-gosh" "supper-club" motif takes you "back to the classic Hollywood era" while "oozing warmth and charm"; the "mouthwatering" steaks and "excellent" stuffed hash browns are a "cut above" the norm, while "outstanding" service and "stellar" bartenders further...

Another thoroughly grand steakhouse inspired by supper clubs -- and expense accounts -- of yore, this marvelous alternative to nearby Morton's of Chicago, the Palm, and Capital Grille outclasses its neighbors by a mile. The setting: A former brokerage house that bore the same name, beneath vaulted ceilings, a substantial chandelier, and a mighty bull's head, where, somehow, digging into massive...

Butcher & Singer Restaurant Review

Butcher & Singer, from restaurant mogul Stephen Starr, exudes a sexy '40s supper club vibe. This is a grand spot, with its reconfigured front bar, soaring 28-foot ceilings and crystal chandeliers resurrected from the Fontainebleau in Miami. Sink into a leather-tufted booth with a perfect Manhattan and get ready for some first-rate beef, buttery, juicy and salty-seared on the outside. Start with...

Certainly S. Starr has made a name for himself in 20 plus years of restaurant and nightlife impresarioness in Philadelphia. Butcher and Singer may be destined to be his crown jewel, however. A sumptuous clubhouse of a place, B&S is modeled after the power-watering holes of bygone days — Delmonicos, Brown Derby, 21 Club, et cetera. Classic versions of steak and seafood make up the menu as Ella...

Stephen Starr reaches into the past with a regal 1940's steak and chop house.

In Short
One great turn deserves another, and so Butcher and Singer has replaced Striped Bass as the latest decadent destination to find a home in the former Butcher & Singer brokerage...

Excellent service!

The food was very, very good. One of the best steaks I have had in a long time. Everyone really enjoyed their meals. But the prices are outrageous. 4 of us for dinner. One $50 bottle of wine (one of the lowest priced bottles on the menu). 4 salads. 4 entrees. A couple of side dishes served family style. That's it. No desert. $365 plus tip. Who can afford to eat at restaurants at these prices...

The Striped Bass restaurant features several seafood specials, including a raw oyster bar, as well as many other fine entrees. Elegant decor matches the elegant creations by the chef.

Butcher & Singer, in the amazing historic location at 1500 Walnut, is an intimate and sophisticated dining experience in a relaxed clubhouse setting. We brought back the true classics from perfect Manhattans and Sidecars to dry aged, hand cut steaks and chops, and freshly caught fish. Timeless and fun for all in the continued age of the American chophouse.

Tips about this business (4)

What to Drink

Brush up on your classic cocktail lingo: the bar specializes in Sidecars, Manhattans, Pink Ladies, gimlets and the like, but doesn't help guide novices by providing a drink menu.

Where to Sit

Call ahead to reserve one of six horseshoe shaped leather booths that provide prime people watching and even better lounging.

Look Good

Trust us, everyone will watch you make your grand entrance through the open-plan dining room. Dress to impress.

There's no such thing as a bad table, but quieter ones border the walls and windows.
