Basilic Restaurant Restaurant Review

French-Swiss bistro Basilic is a tiny space (only 24 seats) on Balboa Island's charming Marine Avenue. While the menu features French (steak au poivre, coq au vin, magret de canard) and Swiss classics (raclette, emincé de veau Zurichois), chef and proprietor Bernard Althaus also creates seasonally inspired dishes each night. For a gourmand experience, opt for the five-course prix-fixe menu,...

Intrepid eaters say "you'll never forget" the "superb", "pricey" French-Swiss fare that "deserves its reputation" at this "hard-to-find" Balboa Island "jewel box" by chef-owner Bernard Althaus; a "thoughtful" wine list, "wonderful" service and "quaint, romantic" ambiance are further assets, though since it only seats 24, "definitely make reservations"; P.S. "Raclette Night is a must-do."

Balboa Island cafe serves Swiss-French fare in an intimate setting.

In Short
With just eight dimly lit tables, chalet-chic ambience and a waitstaff that caters to every whim, Basilic is tailor-made for date-night diners. The authentic Swiss-French menu...

Delicious! Small neighborhood place with big flavors and great service, which makes the whole experience. We went with the servers menu recommendations on food and wine, and all of them were a...

Hidden gem. The two easiest words to describe this restaurant. I came across this restaurant from Zagat, and we were not disappointed on any level. For me, it was an instant transportation to the Ile de la Cité in Paris, such lovely bistros with quality above and beyond the American norm. 1) 2011 Terrebrune …

This charming place is the real deal with traditional French and Swiss cuisine. The dinning area is small and intimate. If you like cheese, you will love the Raclette. We ordered the five-course pre fix menu, and it did not disappoint. Overall experience: 5 stars

Very cute small restaurant. The veal and lamb were delicious. The mushroom and parsley soup was not our favorite. Prices were very reasonable. The restroom is a voyage.

When we lived on the Island we could always count on a great meal and quality service that made our guests feel special. It also was our "go to place" for date night!

Parking: Free parking is available on island streets, but it's hard to come by. In a pinch, park on the Newport Beach side of Marine Avenue (renamed Jamboree) and walk across the bridge.

Look Good: The restaurant is exceptionally generous with freebies; don't fear that unrequested glass of champagne appearing on your bill.

Know Before: The five-course prix-fixe dinner is a bargain. Call for more details.
