In Short
Subdued and sedate, this hotel dining room is a destination the world over. Clothed tables cozy up to leather armchairs that beckon those with money to burn. An open kitchen allows diners to glean preparations, and a… Read More
"Up there in the pantheon of swanky yet understated hotel bars", this "grand" Gold Coast perch at the Peninsula "drips with luxury" as it invites lingering over a "nice quiet drink" (you'd "expect to see Hemingway in the corner nursing a whiskey"); cocktails are "superb", service "refined" and there are "somebodies to spot" galore, so most agree it's "pricey but worth it" for a "special" night...
The least ostentatious of the city's cutting-edge restaurants, Avenues in the Peninsula Hotel lives a double life. The contemporary black-lacquered accent walls aims to satisfy business travelers and other hotel guests, but true culinary connoisseurs come here for something else altogether. Filling the role of top toque is Curtis Duffy, who has worked with some of Chicago's best chefs,...
Tucked away on the fifth floor of the luxurious Peninsula, Avenues isn't what you’d expect from a stately, Four-Star dining institution. The menu forgoes standard hotel meat-and-potates fare in favor of brazengly avant-garde culinary poetry. Try Wagyu beef with spring ramp and roasted bone marrow, or spoon up traditional Thai soup with finger limes and Amish chicken. There's an exciting...
This is the place where you're likely to spot a celebrity -- at least the likes of George Clooney, Jennifer Aniston or Brad Pitt when they're staying in town. The Bar is just one of those places that smell like money (and stale cigar smoke) so don't even thinking about entering unless you're prepared to shell out some serious cheddar. It's classic and cool in that no BS way, and usually filled...
Refined, elegant yet warm and cozy ambience with a fire place and comfortable two seaters. Drinks are crafted to perfection. Service is impeccable. Will be back soon.
I really hate to write this review because I don't want more people knowing about this gem. Drinks are fantastic, ambience is AMAZING (fireplace?? YES!), and service is sweet as sugar -- that's...
The Bar is a little tricky to find. You must take the elevator up to the 3rd floor then go down a hallway and take a right, do not get confused with the ballroom/ dining area. The place is...
This seems like the standard against which all other hotel bars should be judged. It's a quiet, dark place with good (but pricey) cocktails and excellent service. It has a nice, upscale but...
I had a nice boozy evening here with colleagues over a couple of well-made Manhattans (they even had the gourmet cherries). It was quiet but not boring, just a lovely grown-up bar with relaxed atmosphere. I was not buying my own beverages that particular evening, but I'd come back and spend my own money for sure. Worth a visit if you enjoy classy bars.

Chef de Cuisine Curtis Duffy joined Avenues in April 2008. Duffy brings a wealth of experience with him from Alinea where he was Chef de Cuisine for Grant Achatz's world renowned restaurant. Open for dinner only; closed Sundays. Located in The Penninsula Hotel, enjoy a breathtaking fifth floor view of Water Tower Place with an equally breathtaking menu. Appetizers are usually above the $20 and with items like sweet Alaskan king crab with wild mushrooms and white asparagus it is justified. A sample main dish is the seared lamb with savoy cabbage and crushed potatoes with mascarpone....
