Celebrated as Monterey Peninsula's "Refuge by the Sea" - Asilomar State Beach and Conference Grounds is a breathtakingly gorgeous 107 acres of ecologically diverse beachfront land.

Look up retreat in the dictionary, and you will likely find a picture of Asilomar next to the entry. Nestled amongst a forest of Pacific Grove pines (and just footsteps from a coastal playground of dunes, bluffs, and surf), the historic conference grounds are an ideally surreal place not only for a meeting, but for any brand of family getaway as well. Even if you and yours manage to somehow...

Editorial reviews from the web (3)

On 107 acres in a state park, Asilomar stands among evergreen woods on the edge of a wild beach. Thirteen of the 30 buildings at the former YWCA retreat were designed by the celebrated California architect Julia Morgan between 1913 and 1928. The complex mostly serves groups and conferences, and a stay here may bring back fond memories of summer camp: there are games in the social hall,...

Once upon a time, when I was a kindergarten teacher, I'd carefully bookmark the Asilomar Reading Conference weekend the minute it was announced, because not only did we get to spend days browsing all the latest in good literature, but we got to stay at this elegantly-rustic historic oceanfront lodge, with its Julia Morgan-designed buildings and windswept serenity (enhanced by a lack of electronics in the room). With this kind of scenery, who could really blame us for missing a seminar here and there for beach walks?

A historical refuge by the sea.

If your specifically looking for fancy frills, look the other way now and book at a chain of your choice. However, if you prefer a hotel with warmth, character and spectacular grounds/views, look no further. Sure, the place is dated, but you're not on vacation to stay in the room now are you. The staff was great from check in...
