The Asian Art Museum of San Francisco is one of the largest museums in the Western world devoted exclusively to Asian art. But we are more than just an art museum—we are your ticket to Asia. Here, travel through 6,000 years of history, trek across seven major regions, and sample the cultures of numerous countries.
We're one of the largest museums in the Western world devoted exclusively to Asian art. In other words, you can have a lot of fun and learn a ton of cool stuff.
I have been coming to the Asian Art Museum on a regular basis since moving to San Francisco four years ago. It's definitely become one of my favorite art spaces in the city. Their regular collection is strong, and has a lot of fascinating pieces to see. The space, even though appropriated from an old building, is well lit and airy, and the collection itself is curated well, and there is a good flow to the whole building.
I am a member, (which can be split with someone, so you'd share the cost and both get in free, whenever) and I find myself coming back for the revolving exhibitions, and the regular collection.
Friday seems to be the field-trip day... so if you don't like kids and art at the same time, avoid Friday mornings.
Previously in Golden Gate Park and reopened in a stunning space that was once the Beaux Arts-style main library, San Francisco's Asian Art Museum is one of the Western world's largest museums devoted to Asian art. Its collection boasts more than 15,000 art objects, including world-class sculptures, paintings, bronzes, ceramics, and jade items, spanning 6,000 years of history and regions of...
A visit to the Asian Art Museum is like touring Asia without jet lag. Arranged by country, the permanent collection starts with India, meanders eastward and ends with Japan. The order reflects a major theme, the spread of Buddhism across the Asian world. But you don’t need to know that to enjoy seeing the art. Look for the sinuous temple carvings in the India and Southeast Asia collections, and...
This was a highlight of our trip. There are so many beautiful artifacts, you need a full day to see the whole museum. We didn’t do the extra exhibits, there is plenty to see in the regular art collection. This is more of an young...

This museum has some lovely chinese and japanese ceramics and paintings/screens and is well laid out. The museum shop is particularly good.
We visited this to see the Divine Devotion exhibit, it lived up to its name and I thoroughly enjoyed the tour. A docent was there giving an explanation of some of the major exhibits. Definitely worth the price of admission to see such culture. All...
Well worth the visit for this wonderfully regenerated building alone. Comprehensive museum with BCE-up-to-date exhibits....
