This subterranean pub is one of Manhattan's undiscovered treasures -- the quintessential neighborhood "snugger." It's easy to miss from the street, and the regulars like it that way. The All State attracts a grown-up neighborhood crowd drawn in by the casual ambience, the great burgers, and an outstanding jukebox. If you're lucky, you'll get the round table by the fire.

Editorial review from Citysearch

Better late than never to write a review. I just found out my old watering hole is closed. Spent a lot of time there and it was a great place for locals and out-of-towners. There goes another fine institution. Maybe, if i came down from the North Country more often. Rich Rich says hello to all the old patrons. Be well, be happy and laugh out loud.
Walter Rappaport is missed, but hopefully still writing. Sookie, I still love you.

Yelp

Can't believe it's closed down. My (very) local dark and dingy little bar and restaurant with lots of atmosphere and some 'interesting' regulars. Friendly bar staff and waiters will both be missed.

Restaurant closed in October 2007.

Best fried chicken anywhere; a real upper westside institution that is home away from home to many.

The All State is a neighborhood institution that I've been enjoying for the past 25+ years. I enjoyed studying there as a graduate student, going there after work with friends or on a date, and I continue to enjoy it with my husband and children. They make the best and most generous fried chicken you'll get anywhere -- crispy, juicy, with a rosemary and vinegar flavor that is deliciously unique. Their burgers are always excellent -- fresh, and prepared just how you order them. They also make great tuna salad and wonderful steak-fries. In addition, they have a tasty assortment of...

An overpriced, obnoxious

This place is awful. At first it may seem like a nice, cozy, neighborhood spot, but then you realize the food is overpriced and the staff is rude. Usually these types of places are right up my alley--simple, ""dive"" bars. But this place is just obnoxious.
There are a lot of much friendlier bars with good, resonably priced food in this neighborhood.

Pros

+ they serve booze

Cons

- theyre mean, angry, and rude
