An unusually varied menu is usually a red flag, but not here. Friends who live in Gloucester tipped me off to this funky-yet-elegant place on a little side street downtown. They rave about inventive cocktails, creative flavors, and a vegetarian-friendly menu that offers something for everyone (up went the red flag). Could the French onion soup really be as good as the pizza? Could a kitchen...

We were expecting a pleasant experience with excellent food when we went out for dinner at the reopened Alchemy on Friday night. The backstory: the old Alchemy Tapas & Bistro closed last spring and after renovations, reopened as Pinoli a few months ago. After being open only a few weeks the chef took a position in California because Gloucester wasn't...

After closing and remodeling to open the kitchen area and upgrade, Alchemy is back with a great menu and great chef. We had three courses each and each course was fantastic. Wait staff was very knowledgeable and attentive. Wine and beer selections were varied and interesting even though there was not a long list of either. Over the past month...

Great decor, brick and casual with comfortable chairs, ours was a table for six in the back, private with a nice padded bench for the ladies. Good selection of beer and wine got everyone in...

Our last meal at Alchemy in its past version (before Pinoli)...

If you want "sophisticated", go to Alchemy. Price point, upper moderate, good food and service. Gloucester has so many good food choices that range from "dives" with character to pretentious restaurants. We like to "play it by ear" depending on mood, energy and plans for next day.
