The museum contains a large collection of art and historical artifacts, but it doesn't seem like a storehouse at all because the objects' presentation is based on their meaning, not on their value. Superb artifacts from Native cultures from around the state are presented to illustrate the lifestyle of those who made them. This is a nice little museum- takes maybe 2 hours tops. I enjoyed the natural history and Alaska native history sections. There very nice animal specimens and many native arts and artifacts. The museum's contemporary art section is definitely not a strong point.

One place I really wanted to go to in Juneau on this latest trip was the "Alaska State Museum." My daughter and I walked about a mile from the ship to get there and spent at least an hour there, but really could have stayed longer. The 1960's style, somewhat non-discript exterior of the museum is a little deceiving for inside the museum contains some very good displays, artifacts, and artwork....

This museum offers permanent exhibits including natural history, Alaska's Native peoples, and the Russian and American influences on Alaska. There are also a variety of temporary exhibits at the museum at any time.

Founded in 1900, the Alaska State Museum is one of the few museums which has more than a 100 years behind it.
