Abbey Pub Restaurant Review

One of the city’s original Irish pubs, the Abbey dishes up everything from corned beef and cabbage-filled egg rolls to fish ‘n’ chips, chicken quesadillas, burgers and Irish brunch, all washed down with perfectly-poured Guinness. Musical acts perform nightly in the Green Room Pub space, while screens throughout play international soccer and rugby matches.

An “old standby” since 1973, this Northwest Side “hangout” is “two venues in one” – part “concert area” and part Irish resto-bar offering “finger licking good” pub eats; if a few whisper it “suffers from age”, more focus instead on its “great staff”, affordable tabs and summer patio.

The space is small, the bands are great, but let's face it, you're going here for a perfectly poured Guinness and to hear the occasional tale told in a crisp Irish accent by the latest Irish import to grace Chicago. Been around since '73 and still kickin' out some tasty tradional Irish fare: bangers and mash, corned beef aplenty. Convenient parking makes this joint worth at least a beer or two...

Irish brogues abound at this barnlike gathering place for indie rock, folk pop, and other hard-to-classify acts. It's tucked away in a residential neighborhood -- far from the usual tourist haunts -- so you're pretty much guaranteed to be surrounded by locals. Besides Guinness and other Emerald Isle beers on tap, there's a full menu. Traditional Irish music sessions are held Sunday night.

Great venue, decent food

We were in town for a show on the larger venue side of the Abbey, and decided to have dinner in the pub before the show. When we arrived it was near empty, but filled up as show time grew closer. By the time the doors opened an hour before the show, there was just one table left available.

Nothing special

We visited the Abbey Pub in Chicago, IL, yesterday. Although the Guinness was quite good, nothing else was! The restrooms were disgustingly dirty and very smelly from lack of cleaning. We will not return to the Abbey Pub on future visits to Chicago.

Fabulous bar

Went to the abbey on way back from the Vatican City with my partner. The two irish barmen had a great greeting for us and from then on the craic and banter from the two of them was hilarious. We ordered food while watching the arsenal match and the food was fabulous. The barmen were so friendly you could tell...

Good menu items, not all Irish

The Abbey has been around for awhile and you could usually count on a variety of Irish menu items, along with other pub menu items. Since, it was 1/2 price appetizers, we tried the Irish pub rolls. Just average, compared to some other Irish egg rolls that we have tried. They just didn't seem to have enough kick. We also...
