Don't be fooled by the Ethiopian restaurant, which also sports a 124 MacDougal Street address; search for an unmarked black door, slink downstairs and ring the buzzer to enter...
A small, dark, cellar-like bar hidden away and hard to find, that has all the moody ambiance I'm looking for. I thought it was really cool... especially their unique bathroom. *cash only*
Great small beer joint! Super friendly and knowledgeable bartender. Cash only. Beer is bottles only, not cheep, and European (not an American craft beer place, think Belgium, Germany, UK). However the selections are solid! I would definitely come back.
Honestly this place is more of a novelty than somewhere I wanna go back to on the regular. After a few drinks the whole place feels super claustrophobic and it's a wonder that it even meets nyc building safety codes. Come here for the experience, just be prepared to be in the dark.
If you like Belgium beer than this is a must visit. The bar is small, dark and somewhat dingy. Bartenders were very egotistic and not too great at simply serving a beer. We were even told that our phone light 'is crazy bright and kills the vibe' and we should resort to use a candle to read the half soaked menu. Go for the beer not the atmosphere or service. Remember, CASH ONLY.
This place was great, small space no bull(profanity removed) with great beer....my kinda place. The bartender knew his stuff which is always nice, had a couple of hard to find sours....really hit the spot.
“Bohemian” Village suds specialist set in a “long, skinny” underground space that’s a “welcome” refuge from MacDougal Street’s “drunken masses” (it’s accessed via a “speakeasy-type” buzzer); inside, “affable” staffers “steer you toward beer enlightenment” via a “superb” lineup of “international” bottles that will make you forget the “cramped” surroundings.
Early birds can nab a seat at the brass bar beside fellow suds lovers and sample well-curated wines and quaffs such as Belgium's monk-made Orval ale and Germany's crisp Pinkus pilsner.
124 Old Rabbit Club is cash only, so hit one of MacDougal Street's many ATMs on the way.
This subterranean spot once housed the West Village annex to the Bourgeois Pig wine bar.
To combat the high-strength Belgian ales, nab a pretzel-bread sandwich crammed with ham and camembert ($10), sided with chips and pickles.
