According to local legend, this is where Lawrence "Chubby" Woodman invented the first fried clam back in 1916. Today this sprawling wooden shack with indoor booths and outdoor picnic tables is the place for seafood in the rough. Besides fried clams, you can tuck into clam chowder, lobster rolls, or the popular "down-river" lobster combo.
Whether or not Chubby Woodman really invented the fried clam nearly a century ago, this legendary clam shack can nonetheless lay claim to being "home of the fried clam." Today, with its setting beside the Essex River, the no frills bare-bones fast food joint is packed both inside and out all summer long. Out of season, however, things slow down and it can make for a nice escape from the city....
This "shack"-style Essex "classic" "allegedly invented" the fried clam – and though you "can't go wrong" with them here, it's a "go-to" for "generous portions" of any kind of seafood, including "excellent" lobster (in rolls and in the rough); loyalists shrug off the "tour-bus" crowds that "snake down the street", self-service and tabs that can seem "pricey", considering it's just plastic plates...

However, fried fish and chips were available as well as things like lobster, clams etc. and really it's crustaceans I don' t like. I had the fried fish sandwich, well a bun really, and it was very nice! the...
We had a nice lunch of clam chowder , fried clams with onion rings and fries coming along with the Chubby special.
The chowder was good but a bit bland. The fired clams were excellent . This is a very casual place but love the feel of the wooden tables and the nostalgia pictures on the wall. Nice to go...
My husband was terminally ill a year ago but is currently in remission. We live in Florida and a while back he was lamenting during a visit with our son who lives in DC, that he missed the fried scallops at Woodman's. Without my husbands knowledge our son and I made plans for the 3 off us to fly up...
It has been 10 years since my last meal is here. Food is still outstanding. Even though it is a little pricey, still worth it. Went for lunch and enjoyed it a great deal.

IT ALL BEGAN BACK IN 1914 when “Chubby” and Bessie Woodman opened their roadside clam shack on the causeway in Essex, MA. At that time, the TV hadn’t been invented, the average yearly salary was $750, and a gallon of milk cost 32 cents. WWI was just beginning, Babe Ruth was a rookie for the Red Sox, the fried clam hadn’t been invented, and it took all day and a beach to cook a New England ......
