This place is in bad shape...

If you want a clean facility, friendly staff, and healthy environment for you and your kids, please look somewhere else. This place is NOT for you...

First of all, the managers are incredibly short sighted and incompetent. They do not take the customer (or employee) seriously. Every time an employee or customer had a problem, suggestion, or complaint, the supervisors just ignored them. And when the customers or employee talked to the supervisor in person or wrote letters of concern, the supervisors talked to them in a very condescending manner.

I would also watch out for the so called "programs" they offer children. Apparently, they use the word "programs" to substitute the word "baby sitting." For this reason alone, please do not think your child will receive any kind of "dance" or "gymnastics" training. Instead, expect your child to be in a class full of children doing nothing and instructors yelling at them.

Many of the instructors are not suited to teach children (some instructors have touched children in inappropriate ways). The instructors are also not well trained. The instructors seem to have had very little and poor training. In addition, the so called, "Dance Room" is does not even have a proper dance floor. The racket ball court has a better floor. As a result of dancing on this so called "dance floor" made of a thin piece of wood on cement, I've seen children get injured.

Sometimes I have seen good instructors working there. However, they do not last long. Good instructors leave for better pay and better treatment. Needless to say, there is a huge turn over of instructors. Mainly because the pay is terrible, there are no benefits, the environment is depressing, dusty, dirty, and stuffy. Instructors are also treated poorly by supervisors and staff.

The workout rooms are in desperate need of renovation. The carpets are dirty (last shampooed in 1978). I got athlete's foot for the first time in my life when I walked barefoot on their carpet. The building does instill fear for those who use the equipment. Much of it is out of date. They have the same bicycle machines from 16 years ago. The controlled weights seem to be as old as the building itself (1950s maybe).

The environment is also dirty, dusty, dark, damp, and depressing. Do not expect to see any windows or nice scenery. Instead, you'll get an inclosed building with poor air ventilation, poor lighting (that makes you look older and fatter), and old equipment that seems to be never cleaned. Be prepared to associate with people who get fussy about using the stair master and seeing the same annoying people day after day. If you go there often, you'll become a zombie, just like them.

The people never seem to shower before they go into the pool. I once saw an elderly woman get into the pool without taking a shower first. She noticed that she had a witness (me), so she whispered, "why should I shower when the pool is my 'bath'"? Ewww!

The towels are *free* however they limit two per person. The towels are also thrown in dryer (they're not washed) and come out dry and rough. I've gotten a severe rash on my skin EVERY time I use these towels. I've also seen red, yellow, and brown stains on the towels 1 out of 3 times I've used them. It's not fun to clean your face with a towels with brown and yellow stains on it. I guess you get what you pay for...

In summery, the facility is a dilapidated and supervisors and managers are the worst. If this is any indication of incompetence and indifference in the workplace, it's no wonder the Downey YMCA is losing customers and creating a bad reputation for itself. (Edited March 27, 2008)
