Yabu has a great selection of sushi, sashimi, noodles, eggplant with miso, tempura and other Japanese treats. There is a sushi bar if you want to sit there, but regular dining is available, too. Prices are moderate, but considering the quality of the food, are a steal. There is some metered street parking on La Cienega, so you might have to walk to get there. I have never made reservations, so I don't know if you need them or not. Best of all, Yabu never has any 'tude; the staff is great.

Originally an off-shoot of a noodle shop on Pico, this fun and friendly spot is housed in a tepeelike structure with lots of dark wood, a sushi bar and a fanciful bamboo patio. It's a great pit stop for an inexpensive lunch of udon or soba noodles served with myriad toppings-even gold leaf. At dinner, in addition to noodles, you'll find some fabulous sashimi, sushi and more esoteric dishes; the dessert ... more

Soba's the name of the game here -- you can choose from more than three dozen varieties of hot or cold soba preparations -- but the menu extends far beyond these freshly made buckwheat noodles. The inner courtyard's grove of timber bamboo is a nice backdrop for grilled yellowtail collar, soup scented with matsutake mushrooms (prized for their mysteriously musty essence) and toro (tuna belly) sushi ... more

In Short Wood and glass provide clean lines, bringing to mind an ancient Japanese roadhouse. Offering a wide variety of traditional dishes, the mostly a la carte menu encourages diners to mix, match and share. Appetizers include miso soup tarted up with clams and scallions, and tender miso-fried eggplant. Juicy shrimp shu mai (shrimp dumplings) come steamed in a nest of noodles. Fried meats ... more

It's not a scene, it's kind of hidden away with a beautiful and serene patio for when it's nice and warm outside...and the sushi is very fresh and very good..and not expensive! It's every bit as good as Wa further up on North La Cienega, and less pricey. The staff is super nice and the place has a warm, homey, almost romantic vibe. I'd go there with a friend or a lover...but not necessarily to impress ... more

I always go to the La Cienega branch which offers lots of excelent choices from authentic Japanese sushi to soups and BBQ. However my recent visit to the West LA branch was a disapointment. They had less than half the choices of the West Hollywood branch and the food was not nearly as good. The only thing these two locations have in common is the name. They should not have the same ratings. I give ... more
