Avoid at all cost!

I waited 2 months to write this, so my emotions would be calm. I’ve never had this sort of dental experience before in my life. This office doesn’t even deserve the 1 star I’m forced to give it to post this review.

I went to this dentist office after getting a friendly/attractive flyer in the mail (upon moving into military housing here in Seaside). I called to see if they were a provider with my dental insurance (DeltaDental). They said yes, they were contracted with them.

When a dentist advertises same-day appts, one should see this as a red flag. Unfortunately, I was too stupid to.

Upon arriving at the office, you are greeted by the receptionists, who act as though you are a celebrity. While this might be appealing to some, it was unnatural and caught me off guard--their friendliness is so overdone that it loses sincerity & quickly became annoying.

The girl who cleaned my teeth looked at my xrays & started musing "wow" I had a LOT of issues going on, but that she would let the doctor read them. I was scared! Then she said my sinus were close to my teeth, & did I have such & such pain. I said no, & she said "Odd, I've never been wrong". Then she said my teeth were worn down from night grinding, & told me I needed to get a mouth guard. I’ve never been a teeth grinder, my teeth are short genetically, and don’t have pointy edges because of poorly-shaped fillings, not from grinding them. When the doctor came in, I was prepared for the worst, but was told things looked good, but had a tiny cavity on one tooth, & needed a filling on a another replaced. I was so relieved!

I've never had a hygienist playing doctor before! Playing a bad doctor at that!

So I go to check out & set up my next appt & am told my filling replacement was $1,300. I didn’t have time to mentally absorb the cost when I'm asked “How would you like to pay for it?” I’ve NEVER had a dentist ask for payment ahead of work done, & I’m reeling from the $ shock. The dentist had only told me I was getting a filling, she didn’t mention a porcelain onlay or discuss options with me. Additionally, when asking a patient how they will pay a fee that you just surprised them with, it is NOT appropriate to have the big overly-done smile on your face. I asked her to check with dentist & see if that was right. The office manager came in & said it was correct, & described the work (which the dentist should have done!) & then she left, & it was again “How would you like to pay for it?” I made the payment & scheduled the work for 2 days later. I was only paying ~300 out of pocket in the end.

The following day I received a phone call and was told my insurance wasn’t covering as much as they thought, & I owed another ~$500…I was not given a moment to absorb this additional shock, when I am asked “How would you like to pay for it?”. I said (in a very weak voice) “Can’t I wait until Friday to pay for it?” & she said “Yes, you can.” So Friday, when I went in for the work, I quickly handed my credit card & asked to pay. I couldn’t stomach hearing another “How would you like to pay for it?” with that big fake grin.

I’ve never known a business so obsessed with getting paid. Usually, even the bad ones, focus on what they are doing for you, and your contract agreeing to pay stands. I guess these guys have had too many cases of unhappy patients refusing to pay for the work. This should have been another red flag to me.

The day after I had my work done, I get a letter in the mail, thanking me for the opportunity to meet me. Funny thing though, it was from (and hand-signed by) the other dentist in the office, not the one that did my work! I never met the other dentist! Oops!

And lastly, I didn’t calculate out all the fees & % I was paying, because I just tend to trust people—businesses of this type don’t give bad service--they need customer satisfaction and return patients. But afterward, when my statements from DeltaDental came, to seal my dissatisfaction further, I find out that they were not a contracted provider for my plan, & I had paid $254 more than if I had the same procedures done through a contracted provider!

My teeth that got fixed still have rough edges which rip my floss. I went in to have them sanded down, but only ended up getting cut and bleeding gums. Both teeth are still sore 2 months later, and I am eagerly looking forward to January when my employer is switching to another dental plan, so that I can have the teeth xrayed & fixed asap.

I’m not mad, it’s all too surreal. But I’m disappointed. Shocked at businesses who know military families will be moving and won’t be repeat customers anyway. Shocked at the lack of humanity. I don’t understand how the owner (Jennifer Wynn?) can go home at the end of the day & have a quality life, feeling good about what they provide to the world. I’ll avoid using services near a military base at all cost in the future, I’ll travel an hour away if I have to.
