What the community has to say about Vinegar Factory

Information about this business (3)

Eli Zabars world-renowned stores in New York on the upper east side include Elis Manhattan, Elis Vinegar Factory, E.A.T., and Elis Bread. Shopping services and grocery delivery, corporate catering, holiday menus, gift baskets, fresh produce, gourmet restaurants, and the gift of bread await the savvy shopper.

Located in the high-priced Upper East Side of New York , the high cost of products at Vinegar Factory comes as no surprise. Featuring gourmet food- cheese, bread, fruits and vegetables, the store is good place to pick up some exotic items. There are salads and snacks available for those interested in buying a quick lunch. Browsing through the shelves, one can gauge the sheer variety of goods...

In developing the concept for his Vinegar Factory, Eli wanted to get as close as he could to the source of his ingredients by buying his vegetables directly from upstate New York farmers (those he doesn't grow in the Vinegar Factory's rooftop greenhouse), aging his own beef, roasting his own coffee. He envisioned a unique market where the majority of the products, from soup to doughnuts -...

Editorial reviews from the web (3)

Though "a little out of the way" on the UES, Eli Zabar's gourmet market–cum–cafe flagship rewards the schlep with an "extensive" choice of "first-rate" comestibles, from pristine "fresh" produce and "dependably" "excellent" house-baked breads to "wonderful" specialty groceries, "prime meats" and seafood, a "great variety" of "interesting cheeses" and "gorgeous sandwiches" and prepared foods;...

Enjoy a weekend brunch in the upstairs loft space at Eli Zabar's Upper East Side gourmet market.

Vinegar Factory Restaurant Review: You know if a place is only open for brunch that the brunch has got to be good. Or better than good---which is the case at Vinegar Factory. Eli Zabar’s specialty-food warehouse, once a vinegar factory, serves a delightful brunch in its huge upstairs loft space. Displayed on tables are an array of the store’s own preserves and a basket piled with Eli’s fresh...

Eli Zabar extends his empire--to the immense delight of Upper East Siders.

The Scene
It's 7pm. The friends you invited over for hors d'oeuvres are arriving at 8pm. You've got a flawless hosting rep to uphold, but while you're hearing the siren call of Fairway's...

If you feel that employees should be down paid $8.50 an hour and forced to work up to 70 hours without time and a half then this place is for you. But Eli Zabar's greed does not just affect his employees you can count on paying up to twice the retail price for the goods that he sells in his store. Like his bread, then buy it for 30% off at Fairway or 50% off at Costco.

Has it gotten even more expensive? Is that possible? Skip the store and do brunch instead. The bread basket alone is worth $42,000.

Check out the prep food. Plenty of selection even if pricey

Obscene Prices

The food here is pretty good, but I can't get over the obscene prices. The ambiance is a little odd and the 2 times I have gone, it's been empty. I assume if's because it's so crazy Over-priced. There is much better food in the neighborhood for a more reasonable cost. Try Cafe d'alsace for brunch instead. The service is better there also.
