Velleggia's Restaurant

Velleggia's, ambiance of an enema, decorated like a closet

Review Rating
We went to Little Italy and the first restaurant we saw was Velleggia’s. It had a big sign out stating the “Best Italian Restaurant 2007”. We should have known better because the front steps were falling apart, the doors were dirty and the entry area was nothing like a fine restaurant. The bathrooms were unisex and hadn’t been cleaned. The towel dispenser was broken and a roll of brown paper towels was sitting in dirty water. If the staff uses these facilities they will be contaminating the food. These owners don’t have a clue about running a restaurant. There were mirrored ceilings and walls. Some tables and chairs were old medieval style and others were beat up tables that you would see in a diner. They had large bottles of cheap wine placed in odd areas. They had huge dirty wine glasses with a champagne bottle inside the glass placed around for cheap decoration. A large Walmart style glass bowl was hanging on the wall and a string of Christmas lights across a window with only half the light working. The wood floors were dirty and in need of repair. Our table was old and sticky and, they were playing only Frank Sinatra songs way too loud. This place had the ambiance of an enema and was decorated like a closet. Tables had cheap paper napkins and no table cloth. Our only appetizer was calamari and it smelled fishy. It was a frozen pre-breaded product of poor quality and my veal was tough and thick. The vegetables were cold, prepared amateurish and might as well been served whole. Sodas were in plastic bottles to pour yourself and the waitress was nice but she was more like a waitress for a diner. Velleggia’s, please take that sign down. It’s a lie and people will get a negative impression of Little Italy. There is no way you were the best anything and I seriously question these positive reviews. At $120.00 plus tip for four dinners, one appetizer and no alcohol, we were robbed. I guess you need to charge more because you have so few customers.

In the beginning, Velleggia's was a gathering place for the neighborhood crowd who would get together around the small wooden table and share a bottle of vino while exchanging stories of the old country or indulging in a game or two of "tre sette," "briscola" or other card games which they had brought with them from their native Italy. The passage of time has brought about many physical changes to ... more

The huge metal and glass awning and ivy-covered entranceway may be imposing, but the atmosphere inside this spacious, colorful restaurant is casual and friendly. The kitchen here may not be as creative as others in Baltimore's Little Italy, but the dishes (mostly old favorites like Minestrone, Chicken Parmigiana and Saltimbocca) are well prepared, beautifully presented and moderately priced. And the ... more

Stop in Velleggia`s for a restaurant that offers guests Italian meals. Expect the average entrée to cost $12 to $20, and go dressed casual.

Authentic Italian eatery serves traditional cuisine, such as antipasto, scalloppini and primavera dishes, as well as offers a variety of salads.

It's always crowded at Velleggia's. The place is loud and fun, and you'll probably have to wait a few minutes. But then the food will come, and you'll be glad you had patience. The fettuccine al Mare Bianco is wonderful, studded with shrimp, scallops, and crab. Cannelloni is rich and soothing. And there are veal, beef, and chicken dishes cooked the Italian way, too. It's all good.

Everything we've had at Velleggia's has been good. (Maybe they're trying a little too hard with the new gelato bar and their application as a night club - which hasn't happened yet.) The service is pleasant and cares what you think. Definitely an affordable, nice meal out for family or romance in Little Italy. One of our favorites - hope they stay around!

As I strongly suspected the Coffman clowns (the new owners of Velleggia’s) were going to be out of business soon and now they are. When you use deception to claim something you are not, karma will catch up with you. All these highly rated posts for this restaurant were obvious B.S. and an attempt by the new owners drum up business in a dishonest manner.

The old Velleggia’s was very good when the ... more

The worse Italian restaurant ever

I have never written a review on any restaurant before but after eating at Velleggias this last Saturday night and reading the signs all over Velleggias that they were voted the best Italian restaurant in Baltimore, I felt compelled to write my first. Velleggias is the worse Italian food I have ever had. My wife could not eat the Alfredo and they would be better off if they put Rago over the Lasagna ... more
