Editorial review from Citysearch

I would recommend this business to anyone owning foreign car. I have had my cars worked on for years by Lee , one of the mechanics working there. He has done work on my Subaru & Miata also an Aspire I used to own. I have had no issues with the work done. I owned a Mazda RX7 long ago but traded it in as I could not find a mechanic to work on it [It never seemed to run well even after it was taken in]. When I spoke of this to Lee he started in on how great the car and the motor were although it was a unique, finicky motor [my words, his were more exact] that few knew how to work on. I don't...

I initially received estimates from USAA and Joe Machen's Ford in Columbia MO for work on my bumper, hood, and passenger side but they were unable to perform work within the allotted time I had between out processing Fort Riley, KS and my report date for Fort Bragg, NC. When Joe Machens was unavailable, I brought my 2006 BMW 325xi to Tom's Imports on June 30th, 2011. I described the work I wanted on the hood, bumper, and passenger side and showed him the estimates I received from Joe Machens, offering to pay him the same as the estimates for the same labor and parts. Tom said he would do...

We have had several VWs we've inherited, that had set for years. The guys at Tom's were there to answer any of our questions in trying to get them up and running. When we got in over our heads they were there to save us. I've gotten to the point with these guys that I base my car purchases on whether or not they will work on it! They are honest and know VW like no one else. Recommend them to...

Don't ever go here

I coughed up nearly $1,500 for a new gasket set to these con artists, who originally put the estimate at $600. They refused to loan me a car or even to give me a ride back to my apartment after I dropped it off — and they kept my car for well over a week after claiming the repairs would only take three days.

In short, never again. Other auto servicemen told me afterward they could have done the job for half the price.

If you're new to Columbia and looking to avoid Joe Machens, I've found Privitt Auto Service to be decent folks.
