It grabbed its name from the Theater of the Living Arts experimental group of the '60s, which included then-future stars like Sally Kirkland and Danny DeVito. The theater became Philly's top repertory film house before it switched to the video business in the '80s.

Despite it's upscale neighbors, this TLA Video store retains most of the same downtown attitude as the other locations around Philly. Same set-up for renting and buying videos and dvds, so no confusion for repeat visitors. Good selection. Not enough parking on Friday and Saturday evenings.

the most extensive collection of movies i've ever seen anywhere - just make sure you have ample time to browse if you don't know exactly what you want. the staff is entirely composed of helpful film buffs - made that way through an arduous application process (i applied, and clearly my knowledge of movies was not enough to even warrant an interview!). if you can't find the movie you want to see...

This store has everything. It's literally the place where you could walk in, and not know the name of the movie, its cast, what it was about, where it was set, but that the boy had a red cap on, and this staff could tell you what movie you were thinking of. (Not that I recommend you do that!) Staff is knowledgeable, conversational, and very friendly. I highly recommend this chain to anyone...
