The Kress

Superb sushi - Go There NOW!!!

Review Rating
Then there is The Kress, named after the department store that was in this Art Deco building many years ago. Most recently this place was the longtime home of Frederick's of Hollywood. Now the decor is like a collision of Chinoiserie with Art Deco -- terribly over-the-top, yet some how strangely appropos to Hollywood. It's one big glamorous place that just shrieks swankosity. But the food, it truly is noteworthy. Most notable is their executive sushi chef, Travis Kamiyama. Reviews on Chowhound have likened it to Urasawa, so I was keen to sample such highly praised sushi. He has fresh fish flown in from Japan daily. We ordered omakase from Hiro, one of the chefs under Travis and it was well nigh a religious experience - halibut and snapper sashimi from Japan, the fattiest toro you can imagine, hamachi with truffle oil, geoduck and two varieties of eel that were unctuous and delightful. The uni looked just like a cat's tongue and melted in my mouth. We chatted with Hiro and Travis about manga and anime (Hiro san is quite the fan), and about my preference of Tatsuya Nakadai over Toshiro Mifune. Between courses I cast an eagle eye on my husband to observe strict sushi etiquette (fish this good need not be doused with shoyu and wasabi). No fears, it was all just one big domo arigato to Hiro sama, for he was truly a master of sushi. We treated the three chefs to glasses of sake. It was really some of the most marvelous sushi ever, and tragically near empty on an early Thursday evening (good for us though, ordering omakase).
The Kress

The Best Sushi Experience of My Life

Review Rating
I just had three hours of the tasting menu at The Kress sushi bar and was totally impressed and sated. Much of the fish was flown in from Japan, the sushi bar was top-notch and the service was superlative. Considering the absolutely impeccable quality of food, the explosive pan-Asian interior and great staff, I almost feel like I was robbing them. The Kress has not caught on yet for it's dining, so you can actually get into the restaurant, but it is already mobbed on weekends. My suggestion: go to The Kress right away or you will be regretting it. This place is about to explode.

Editorial Reviews from the web

Leaving Las Vegas in the dust, this over-the-top, red-hued Hollywood landmark is luring high-rolling diners and sceney club crawlers for a taste of Asia and a strong dash of flash.

First things first: This place is huge. Like, so huge the main dining room alone seats 220 people. Built in 1934, the multi-level art deco-style building was originally an S.H. Kress Department Store. In 1949, it became the world headquarters for Frederick's of Hollywood. Now, after more than two years of restoration, owner Michael Viscuso (who helped resuscitate San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter)... more

I was thinking of a place to take friends from out of town and a associate of my recommended I try the Kress. I was embarrassed and not happy with anything that night.

I asked for a manager and it took 32 minutes for him to arrive at my table and he said sorry about the service but we are quite busy tonight and walked away. I will never go back.
