For years, visitors to L.A. would throw a decent outfit into their rental car so that after a romp on the beach, they could fathom European antiquities at oil-family billionaire J. Paul Getty’s villa museum in Malibu. Now it’s a hilltop complex in Brentwood, and it’s the setting that’s the must see. The tram up from the parking garage affords a bird’s eye view of the famed 405 freeway that cuts...

Editorial review from KidScore

Another great stop for older kids, the Getty Centers main attraction is the well-done art museum. Temporary exhibitions are also always a...

This is architect Richard Meier's masterwork, a stunning 110-acre modernist complex in the Santa Monica Mountains housing the Getty Museum and other foundation buildings. When it was commissioned in 1984, the white travertine came from a quarry near Rome, and a special guillotine method for slicing it had to be developed for the construction. The Getty Museum is a symphony of light, with pools,...

Wonderful Views and Wonderful Art

Average Rating

The buildings designed by Richard Meier are beautiful. The art collection has art objects from different periods, such as the Louis XIV period. There are wonderful porcelain objects (Sevres) and sculptures. I was especially impressed by impressionist painters, such as Van Gogh.

After waiting 45 minutes for a small charcuterie platter, I...
