This venerable Austin hotel is known for its rooms and its restaurant, but the very best part of it might be the evocative bar, which transports you to the days of the Old West. Everything's done up in cowhide and polished copper, the barmen are genteel, and the crowd is all Texas money. There's live piano music some evenings, and always enough activity to make the place feel lively, even on a... more

Topping it all off is a... more

Enjoy this stately lounge fit for a cattle baron by taking a date there for an after-dinner drink. She’ll have the white-chocolate martini. You’ll have a Laphroaig. Split a dessert under the gilded ceiling. Let the super-stuffed leather couch cradle you while the lounge singer croons. Excuse yourself to the men's room. Clean up with a luxury towelette. Check your wallet for a condom. No-go?... more

Some work friends and I have found this to be a great alternative to sitting in traffic. A little upscale and possibly snotty, but safe, clean, comfortable and not too loud unless you get close to the piano when someone is playing background elevator tunes. A good place to be in a bar scene, without going into a bar...kind of.

I love Texas, don't get me wrong, but this place is just too over the top for me. There are too many Texas decorations, including some iron statues that I can't really figure out. The crowd is overly subdued also, and I just never feel comfortable there.
