The Abbey

Dependable, But Not As Great as Years Gone By

Review Rating
The Abbey is a solid bar, great place for night time drinks and desserts, a place to meet your friends, a quality lunch--and is downright huge, too. Despite its material success, the Abbey has kind of grown too big for its neighborhood--it took over about 4 buildings in ten years. It used to be the great little coffee house around the corner, but there is so much of it that it's hard to describe the Abbey in a word or two. Is it a giant bar with a patio, a restaurant with a coffee shop in the front and a velvet rope or what? Definitely bring your friends from out of town. The food, staff and service are good. Prices are pretty good for WeHo and there is so much space that there are places to get lost with your friends and enjoy a good time. There is no convenient nearby parking and WeHo tickets. As an Abbey patron for over ten years, I feel it has lost some of its mojo.
The Abbey

beyond neighborhood bar

During the day it serves as a coffee house with great food and tempting desserts. At night it's a total scene. Sad to say the quality of this place has fallen as it has become more popular. Example - They make their mojitos with Rose's Lime Juice - and that is an abomination!
The Abbey

used to be cooler..

Review Rating
I've been going to the Abbey on and off for the last decade. As other reviewers note, it's been slipping lately. While the Abbey has been known for being the cool, laidback gay bar/coffeehouse in town (back in the day when Frieda's was still around), the crowd is increasingly straight, and as obnoxious as any straight barclub in the Hollywood area. The food has declined, too - I remember when they used to make the best Fettucine Alfredo in Weho. *sigh* The Abbey used to be an actual destination, that you plan to go to. Now, it's barely worth the parking woes.

With about 16,000 square jawsum, we mean square feetto fill, the line of tight T-shirts outside has only gotten longer. Insert size matters joke here. Once past the gargoyles at the entrance, a bevy of boys ogle each other over martinis that are fruity in more ways than one. The big, breezy front patiocomplete with fountain, stone statues and treesis only one arm of the monolith. All the way in... more

In Short An unassuming but comprehensive coffee bar and outdoor lounge leads into a maze-like setting, which gets more complex and exotic the deeper it goes. Subsequent rooms are drenched in ineffably warm red and gold lights, highlighted by a sublime Arabian patio with recessed cabana mattresses draped with swaths of white fabric, and the contradiction of a burning fireplace and... more

Since last year's expansion, the Abbey is a huge bar complex with indoor and outdoor areas, multiple bars and candles everywhere. Hang out with the boys and girls in the busy outdoor patio or chill in front of one of the fireplaces or in the comfy couch booths in the back. A great place for happy hour, brunch or a night out.

The Abbey is the creme de la creme of West Hollywood. Though it's ostensibly a gay bar, it transcends labels, even on the gayest of nights--for example, the annual Halloween costume contest. Urbane clientele, both gay and straight, sip decadent signature martinis out on the stone patio by the fountain or in the white-curtained cabanas by night or day. A $2 million, 4,000 sq-ft renovation and... more

I find this place so incredible that it remains such a destination, with a staff that couldn't care less to serve you. On several visits we have sat down or sat at the bar and were completely ignored for as long as 20 minutes. I can't believe a bar tender would be so blind to future tips! I would excuse this if the place was packed with patrons, but it was the early dinner hour. ... more

Much better choices in the area, the only reason this place survives is it's location and outdoor area- food and drinks are overpriced. Food quality is poor and presentation is pretty boring...
