Editorial reviews from the web (4)

"Creative sushi" and "tasty" Japanese home-cooking basics at a favorable "quality-to-price ratio" earn these TriBeCa–East Village twins "favorite-in-the-'hood" status; a "helpful" staff adds warmth to the "nothing-fancy" setups, which "bustle" at prime times.

The original Takahachi, serving Japanese fare to the East Village.

The East Village's latest and greatest venue, full of underground excitement, an excellent beer selection, and diverse cocktails. The place reminds us of an old Tom Waits' song, the kind of place where "I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy." Do not miss out on the brilliant $20 all you can drink draft beer specials on Monday nights with Monday Night Football and live DJ.

Oversized sushi and a late-night scene draw crowds to this casual Alphabet City favorite.

This is a great little spot. The people who work here are nice, everything is pretty quick, and it's relatively easy to get a seat. As far as the food, always seems fresh and tasty!

Located on the fringe of Alphabet City, this eatery may not look like much but, then again, that's par for the course if you're looking for a diamond in the rough. Raw fish is king here, and the neighborhood folks know it. Try the sushi, sashimi or both, but keep in mind that the beef sukiyaki, ginger-fried chicken, and soba and udon noodles are also good bets. Make sure you arrive early, or...

“Hit-or-miss” East Village basement bar that’s “sometimes empty, sometimes packed”, but is usually “chill and undistracting”; the tile-floored, film noir–ish setting lures a seen-it-all crowd, but when “being cool is no longer bearable”, you can always play “Big Buck Hunter.”
