It's not that they did anything seriously wrong, but if you'd like to be treated like a human being and not a machine on the assembly line, don't go here. For a surgery that took less than one hour, I had four different nurses (2 to prep, one for anesthesia, and one for post-op). I had to explain everything 4 times, and some of the post-op instructions were wrong. I guess the post-op nurse thought I was still loopy from anesthesia, because when I questioned her about the instructions she gave me, she insisted they were right (if I'd had just one nurse for pre- and post-op, this could have been avoided). I got the feeling from the post-op nurse that her job was to get me into my car as soon as possible.
The policy of the Surgery Center (as I read in my packet) is to allow no one with you in pre- or post-op. They then said I could have my husband with me for pre-op, but not until after I was awake for post-op. I had a lot of anxiety, and after I basically had a panic attack, they let me have what I told them I needed, but it was upsetting that I had to be hysterical before they would listen to me.
They also didn't answer some last minute questions I had before the surgery (had to get the patient to the OR on time, I suppose). And the doctor didn't tell me after the surgery that it was something different that was wrong and he removed something else--I found this out a week later (I realize the Surgery Center doesn't employ the doctors, but it was just one more nail in the coffin so to speak).
What I learned from this experience is to INSIST that you get the care you want, wherever you go. However, it's hard to ask questions when they don't give you any information, and frustrating when they won't answer questions to your satisfaction. I should have refused to go into surgery instead of allowing them to gloss over my questions. Don't put your implicit trust in them, insist on having an advocate/family member with you AT ALL TIMES for pre- and post-op, and bring your I-pod or other recording device to record everything said. Writing it down isn't always the best because you can miss a lot when they're rattling everything off to you.
