Editorial reviews from the web (3)

"You'd swear you were in Tokyo" at this "serene", underknown Midtown Japanese where "skillful" chef Nao Sugiyama's "outstanding" kaiseki meals are ferried by "warm", "wonderful" servers; the "unforgettable experience" comes at a "steep" prix fixe–only tab, but the pre-theater deal packs "value."

Sugiyama Restaurant Review

What Nao Sugiyama achieves at his eponymous restaurant cannot simply be called cooking, but edible art. At this small and surprisingly casual spot, diners gather in booths or sit at the counter and gaze into the open kitchen. Sugiyama, who made his name with the SoHo restaurant Katana in the '90s, greets many customers himself, and often with “Nice to see you again.” There is a wide array of...

Awesome

The food is extaordinary, amazing and delicious. And ontop of that it is a mom and pop shop - The Hostess is wife to Chef Nao! We’ve been going to this very special place for years and enjoy it even more wit each visit.

We have been going to Sugiyama for years. It is so nice to see the same chef, the same staff and the same high level of food and service maintained over so many years. It is not at all expensive for what you get at Sugiyama compared to many watered down quasi Japanese restaurants in the city.

Exceptional quality Japanese food delivered in multiple small plates.
It's pretty, exceptionally tasty and considering its New York not bad value.
No California I'll here and that's good in my book.

Food was very good and creative. Ordered 5 course meal. Everything was very creative and tasty. Portions very small. This is a unique place to go for dinner after having a huge lunch.
Not sure it was worth price even for NYC

My mother and I decided to have two different meal courses. I had the $65 authentic 6 course dinner, and she had the $98 6 course kaiseki meal. There was a little overlap, but I definitely understand why her meal cost so much more. At the same time, I definitely enjoyed my meal. Both run through the range of cooking...

Know Before You Go: Diners grill meat courses themselves over a small flame, and the restaurant can get smokey at times.
