This Is What a Diner Should Be

The State Street Diner is the perfect place to grab a breakfast of eggs, bacon, toast and home fries either at six in the morning before work or two in the morning after a night going to bars. If you want to visit a classic American diner, then don't leave Ithaca without stopping here! The seats are on springs and bounce up when you stand. There is a cigarette-friendly undercurrent and smell. The State Diner is like looking at tigers and pandas in the wild; you won't be able to do it forever. Stop by when you can.

I consider this to be one of the landmarks in Ithaca since it has been around forever. The atmosphere is your typical diner atmosphere with a large plate grill right behind a long counter. The can make pretty much anything you want here and it is refreshing to go into a nice well lit eatery after a night of partying.

Even though my friend lived next door to this place, after the first visit, we refused to ever go back - it was that bad. The place was dirty (as were the glasses our drinks were served in), the service was awful and the food was extremely bland. If you are a non-smoker, avoid this place as dining there is like dining inside a smoke stack.

Although I don't live in Ithaca anymore, I can recall the many times I visited the State Diner. I love the decor, it feels like you've stepped back in time. The breakfasts are really super good, and their coffee is to die for - not gourmet, but good. I also love the fact that you can still smoke in there! For non-smokers I'm sure it's a turnoff (although there is a non-smoking section) but... more
