Square 1682 Restaurant Review

Square 1682, the sleek restaurant at the Hotel Palomar Philadelphia, a Kimpton property in the former Art Deco American Institute of Architects building, is a convivial spot that's as ideal for power lunching as it is for a cozy dinner for two. But it’s chef de cuisine Caitlin Mateo's globally minded fare that you'll remember, especially after sampling small plates such as bacon-wrapped dates...

Set in a “knockout” bi-level space in the Hotel Palomar near Rittenhouse Square, this “hip, stylish” entry deals in “innovative” New American cuisine with frequent menu changes that “keep things appealing” for regulars, even if some snipe about “small portions” and “expensive” tabs; with “a little more effort” to improve “disjointed” service, it could emerge as “a destination.”

Citysearch Editorial Review

The official restaurant of the Hotel Palomar Philadelphia makes every effort not to be typecast as a hotel restaurant, choosing instead to provide an entrance off the street and a chef with a pedigree that precedes him. The street level greets patrons (and, let’s admit it, hotel guests) with a tight, polished lounge that appeals to the well-heeled “getting a drink with a business associate” crowd. Upstairs, in a space that doesn’t allow itself the luxury of relaxing outside its straight lines and hard floors, three rows of two-tops stand at attention, positioned to provide support to...

Square 1682 is a good middle ground spot in the Rittenhouse area. It's nice without being pretentious or fancy. It's reasonably priced without being ridiculous in either direction. There are...

I was rather disappointed that the menu was special for Valentine's Day. It was not listed on the website. The menu was limited.

It was a good experience. Had to wait about 10 minutes beforehand in the hotel lobby, but we were early and it was a busy Saturday night so the short wait was understandable. Seated at the table furthest from the front door and directly next to where the servers/busboys would enter/exit the dining room. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise - our waiter seemed to be available whenever he...

The hummus and eggplant, grilled octopus and brussel sprouts were amazing. I would highly recommend these dishes. The octopus was grilled to perfection. The duck entree was very good as well. It was a bit noisy, however we dined on a Saturday evening so it was quite crowded. The cocktails were creative and delicious. Would definitely go again. Service was excellent; friendly and prompt.

No syrups are allowed at the bar, meaning everything used to make the drinks is freshly squeezed, muddled or shredded.

Chef Tellez has worked as chef de cuisine for Charlie Trotter and as executive chef at Striped Bass. But he works full-time in this kitchen, rather than flitting around to different properties like many famous chefs with hotel restaurants do.
