For a solid, stick-to-your-ribs meal, look no further. Upscale comfort food prevails with a few fancy bistro-like touches (a goat cheese crostini appetizer, marinated steak tips) and the catch of the day. Fervent local fans rave (justifiably so) about the meat loaf and mashed potatoes or the super-cheesy mac and cheese. Pair dinner with one of the many half-bottles of wine or champagne on the... more

Devotees of this hip basement restaurant swear by the no-fuss options such as a truly addictive macaroni and cheese, meat loaf, and steak tips. Among the more-interesting offerings are the appetizers, such as the spicy caesar salad, and the fish of the day, which might be trout amandine or locally caught bluefish. The wine list is compact but varied. Reservations not accepted. AE, D, DC, MC, V.... more

At a mere $10 above cost, all of Silvertone's wine and champagne bottles are a bargain. The same offerings can sometimes go for three times as much at other area establishments.

Although there is a large private dining room behind the bar, don't show up with a big group without calling ahead. It's only open on Friday evenings, or by reservation for special functions.

Vintage family snapshots, liquor posters and radios create a retro vibe at this minuscule, yet enormously popular bar and restaurant. Even the prices are retro--a dollar goes a long way. The wait for a seat often exceeds an hour, but it's worth the wait. I have become a regular at Silvertone. As someone who works in downtown Boston, I am always looking for a good lunch spot. Their food is delicious, affordable, and they have a great bar selection. Service is spot-on and consistent, and it is fun whether you go on a weekday for lunch, or on a Saturday night for drinks with friends.

Silvertone is a great place to eat if looking for good prices. Drinks are very affordable as well. The third time I went in, the bartenders knew my name and drink of choice. Very cool place in the financial district.

This place is a good after work date place. The prices are good for comfort food, although I would say the the menu is pretty small. The ambiance is nice. There is usually a long wait for a table on a Thur. or Fri. night.
