Editorial review from KidScore

The Seattle Monorail runs from downtown (by the Westlake shopping center) to Seattle Center (Space Needle area). Its fun for kids, and...

This elevated train from the World's Fair provides transportation to and from the Seattle Center in a flash.

In Short
Forget about zero to 60, how about a mile in 60 (really 90 seconds, but who's counting)? This 1960s technology is still up to speed and the elevated train remains the best way to...

OK, saves time, kids seemed to like it

The monorail is ok but nothing extraordinary. The actual ride is short at 2 minutes and the price seems a little high at $2.25 one direction. However, after spending some time at Seattle Center it is nice to have an easy ride back to the main part of downtown instead of walking (about a mile or so ride).

Very good way to travel

We used this a few times as we were staying out by the space needle. Very efficient and reasonably priced. Some nice views as you travel through the city.

Fun and inexpensive

Interesting way to step back in time to experience an earlier generation's view of "future" transport. Good on Seattle for keeping it running.

Kids love it

My kids and I love to park at the Seattle Center, take the monorail downtown, have lunch, and then head back. Definitely a fun way to travel in the city!

Excellent way to get around

What a great way to travel back and forth from downtown to the Seattle Centre. We were staying at the Four Points Sheraton nearby, and it became our major transportation venue to get around. Because it was late March, it wasn't crowded which made it all the more enjoyable.

Administration

Seattle Center Monorail provides fast, direct transportation between downtown Seattle's Westlake Center (5th Ave & Pine) and Seattle Center (home to the Space Needle, EMP Museum, Pacific Science Center and Chihuly Garden and Glass). The train departs approximately every 10 minutes and is open daily.

The Seattle Center Monorail was built for the 1962 Seattle World's Fair to provide a crucial link between the fairgrounds and the amenities downtown.

Construction began in April of 1961 by Alweg Rapid Transit Systems, who received the bid when it offered to underwrite the entire cost of construction.

The monorail opened to the public on March 24, 1962 nearly one month before the start of the...

Tips about this business (3)

Fun Fact

Seattle commissioned the Monorail for the 1962 World's Fair to ensure ease of transportation to the event's location. It proved such a useful commodity that the city kept it around and to this day, Seattle's system is the only monorail that turns a profit.

The Extras

The monorail arrives about every 10 minutes to transport people to and from the Seattle Center, so there's never a long wait.

Know Before You Go

The monorail is not a part of Metro and Metro passes are not accepted. However, a monthly pass good for unlimited use is available for $40.
