San Francisco Brewing Co

Meh

This is a cool old bar. Apparently Jack Dempsey used to work the door here, so says a plaque on the front. And it survived the 1906 earthquake. However, the beer here leaves something to be desired. I drank through the entire selection (except the stout, which I don't d) and it was consistently kinda watery. Try 21st Amendment in the South of Market area for better local microbrews.

Glowing stained-glass windows, a giant palm ceiling fan, and a brass-trimmed mahogany bar dating from 1907 give this pub a cozy, weathered atmosphere within which to sample its huge list of beers, a handful of which are brewed on the premesis. Two happy hours (4p-6p, midnight-1a) bring prices as low as $1 a beer. A pub menu that includes Gumbo is also served. Finally, live jazz without a cover... more

As the grandfather of the city's brewpubs (it was San Francisco's first), this watering hole garners serious respect from beer lovers who have been bellying up to its mahogany bar since 1907. The bar has changed names and owners throughout the years, but the original stained-glass windows, beveled glass mirrors and wood paneling have been meticulously restored. The spittoon and rotating fan--a... more

Surprisingly low key for an alehouse, this cozy brewpub serves its creations with burgers, fries, grilled chicken breast, and the like. The bar is one of the city's few remaining old saloons (ca. 1907), aglow with stained-glass windows, tile floors, skylit ceiling, beveled glass, and mahogany bar. A massive overhead fan runs the full length of the bar -- a bizarre contraption crafted from brass... more

Required beer geek stop, highly recommended tourist stop for a "non tourist" experience. What a pub should be - burgers and fries are perfect with the above average brews, the period interior just makes you feel good sitting there, and the staff are friendly and relaxed. You feel that this ought to be your local bar back home. We're from Texas, we always stop in more than once when we're... more
