Long story short. I live less than a mile from this place. My furnace went out on a sunday morning, coldest day of the year. Their quote for repair: $200 just to show up & $25 every 15 minutes. Part would cost at least $150. Their guestimate (because they weren't sure they could fix a Bryant furnace) was just under $500.

Air Conditioning Engineers (2 blocks north of them) quoted me under $300 (Sunday premium), BUT were very helpful & honest in diagnosing the problem. Told me it was an easy do-it-yourself fix. (Not much of a handyman here!) After a few calls, I was able to find the part for $40 and installed it myself in less than 10 minutes.

Summarizing....if my new contact isn't available, I will use Air Conditioning Engineers. Unfortunately, Main Heating & Cooling....I've never witnessed the quality of your work, but because of this one phone call on a very cold January 2007 morning, I never will!!!

Beware

ThI purchased a new Furnace and A/C unit from Goodman. Just after two years I find that the A/C unit had a leak. I called Main heating and cooling, their Shelby office to have them check it out. On the first visit the technician found the issue was a bad evaporator coil. He was going to order the part from the manufacturer and he or another technician would return no later than 12 days maximum with the new part from the manufacturer. He stated that the coil is very easy to replace in the furnace. The manufacturer had an easy access panel for it and the unit just slides in and out of the transition for easy replacement . That it would take no more then 2 hours for installation. So I paid the $465 for the visit waited for their call.

Well I had to call the company exactly one month later to get the status of my part. I spoke to the operator/dispatcher. She couldn't find the status of my call. An hour later I receive a call from her. She stated that they have the part in and that they will schedule a day for a technician to come out to install it. She gives me a quote of 328 dollars for the installation of the new coil, 4 hours installation time, warranty processing fee and freon.. I said to her that the initial technician said that it was an easy installation for a total of under $160 and as for the freon charge they were suppose to call me no later than 12 days after the initial visit, and that I had to contact them a month later. She apologized and said that they had technicians that had quit their company and a huge backlog of work. That was her reason why they hadn't contacted me. My response to her was 'This is my problem... how?" Somehow I think she expected me to understand why other customers stepped in line in front of me while I was waiting for my work to be completed by them. I had to point that out to her as well. She stated that the reason why it would take 4 hours to install the evaporator coil was that original technician said that the 'transition' from the furnace to the duct work was tricky and it would take longer to install contradicting what he said to me. I didn't understand why the technician would have said something different to me and than to her but I said that I needed this part installed, was pretty much held hostage to getting this job finished and would we would talk about this later. When the technician came out almost a week later he had the part and installed the part in less than two hours as the first technician stated. When he gave me the bill it was for $328. I spent entirely too much money and their story changed too many times for the reason my bill was so much. The grand total was almost $800 for a $1400 unit under warranty. If you choose to go with this company I suggest looking at another company. They give good work but it is way overpriced. Do so at your OWN RISK.

Our furnace wouldn't start this fall. We called Main and scheduled an appointment for two days later. They came out and diagnosed the problem in about 45 minutes. When my wife asked them how much it would cost to repair it, they went out in their truck for 20 minutes and came back with a $200 bill. They spent 20 minutes in their truck(at the $18.95/15 minutes rate) to tell us how much they would charge to fix it(in other words, $40 to quote the job...seriously?). They told us the Control Board was bad and that the heat exchanger was cracked.

Main Heating & Cooling Estimates:
$600 to replace the control board.
$1500 to replace the control board & heat exchanger.
$5000 (recommended) to replace the furnace(not including the air conditioning unit).

So I called my father to see who he had replace his furnace last year. The company was Classic Heating & Cooling. They replaced my furnace with a new Carrier model for under $1500 installed(including a new chimney liner as well).

I recently had Main to my home to fix my furnace. I must say that the technician was very well qualified to repair the problem. However, I feel the price I was charged for the parts was astronomical. From what I can tell by shopping on-line, I could acquire the part for approx 1/2 what they charged...and I bet they'd pay less for the parts than I would...a little markup is one thing, but 100% plus??? I will NOT recommend Main Heating and Cooling to anyone, ever.
