Food is good, but, too expensive

For dinner, I generally get their hot and sour soup, lo mein and empress chicken.. All pretty good... However, I've noticed their portions shrinking over the past year or so..

Their lunch buffet is usually their best value for money. They have a decent amount of vegetarian dishes as well.. The sunday afternoon brunch though is way too expensive..

And, they have lazy susans on their round tables which is always a source of amusement when you are in a big group!

Pros
+ Nice ambience, Decent Food, Parking Lot

Cons
- Very expensive, Small portions

Chang Sho , average.

Hi , I just tried Chang sho last night for the first time, it was fairly expensivefor two average entrees and a large soup, $36.00. The ingredients in the food seemed to be all fresh but the flavors were bland and one dimensional. The hot & sour soup was very peppery, the calamari was very salty not much pepper as promised, and last but not least the eggplant was soggy.
Sorry ,I expected a little more from a classy looking restaurant so close to some other great dining experiences so close to places like the Porter Exchange.
Best regards, Jon.

Better then any other chinese place in Cambridge--

I have to agree with others --its not cheap to eat at this place-- sit down or take out your going to pay -- well its worth it if your in the mood for good chinese food.. Service is great-- I think they are a little to good-- they are quick to get you in and out.. Yes they have a parking lot but dont expect to always get a spot on the weekend..place gets packed -- I go to this place every 2 months and its worth the treat-- better then the other place across from porter

Pros
+ nice looking chinese dumplings, no Tv's

Cons
- cost, rush to get the check

Respectable Chinese food, decent atmosphere, ok service

Changsho is a great place to get solid chinese food. I agree with some people's claims that it is overpriced. However, there are not better options in the Cambridge area. You can always count on eating something tasty and different if that is what you desire. Personally I highly recommend the spicy moo-shi. Something I haven't seen a lot of places. I would recommend this to anyone that wants chinese food in Cambridge.

Pros
+ parking lot across the street, taste you can count on

Cons
- service can be on and off, the restaurant is too open inside so when it is crowded, it gets noisy

Overpriced, clean, boring, tasteless...

I took a note of a solide building on Mass Ave a few weeks ago and thought to myself it could be a nice place to visit - I did it yesterday, so my impressions are quite fresh. In short: a clean place with Chinese music making for an authentic fealing of being in a real Chinese restaurant. Nice service. BUT: very much overpriced. The hot and sour soup for 3,50 USD I ordered had absolutely no taste and the portion was too too small. I was given no sugar either spoon to tea. The Sichuan chicken plate which cost 11,50 USD was below average. Not worth visiting.

Pros
+ More or less clean, nice music, nice furniture and service

Cons
- Tasteless food, overpriced, (smiling) waiters oblivious of their direct duties

Awful service, overpriced food

A group of friends and I went here based on others' recommendations. We found that the staff was rude and the food, though decent, was overpriced. What's more, I walked one of my friends home afterwards because she was feeling sick (she threw up as soon as she got home), and I came back to find my car had been towed from the restaurant parking lot. They tow as soon as the place closes. Adding the $90 from the meal, we were out $200 for a poor dining experience... Definitely not worth it....

The atmosphere is very elegant and the menu offers a wide selection of chinese delicacy. The Sunday brunch is a great all you can eat buffet. Try the chicken and eggplant dish it is one of my favorites.

My family and I tried the Sunday Brunch last week and thought it was fantastic. Tons of choices - delicisous Chinese food, steamed buns, dim sum, and sushi too! Great value overall for the quality. We'll be bringing friends back with us next time.

great food, friendly service, and upscale amibiance. my favorite dishes at changsho are steam vegetable dumplings, hot and sour soup, peking duck, mogolian spicy lamb with pan cakes, shrimp with pine nuts, and no doubt the best general gau's anywhere.

Pros
+ efficient service, friendly service

Cons
- charge for tea

fantastic food, outstanding decor!

I saw Changsho profiled on The Chronicle 2 months ago and decided to give it a try.

My friends and I agreed the food was graet - peking duck and general gau's were really incredible here. The decor is fancy, yet inviting.

Recomend this place for great Chinese outside of Chinatown.

Will defnitely visit again in the future.

Pros
+ Food, Free Parking, Atmosphe

They recycle straws.

I had thought Changsho is relatively clean for Chinese restaurants. Then I found they recycle their straws; I had a coke and the waitress asked me if I wanted another. So I answered yes thinking it would be a refill. Anyway, in the second glass of coke was a straw that was not obviously new. The straw had its upper paper-cover on, but when I pulled it off, the straw had drops of diet coke on its outside, which rarely happens if the cover wasn't in fact re-capped.

Anyway, the check claimed the second coke is a separate order. Be careful when they suggest you another soda. And when I argued about the straw, the waitress suspiciously over-reacted. It may sound like only a small thing but my new impression of Changsho is that they run their business quite unlike what they try to look.

Pros
+ look

Cons
- sneaky business style

actually I gave company to one of my friend's because he was hungry. I will go back to this place soon to try.

Cons
- road side parking

Fancy, pricey chinese food

If you want chinese food in a fancy atmosphere, this is the place to go. Portions are small, but the ambience is nice, and you will definitely pay for it. Most of the choices are more americanized chinese food - walnut shrimp, etc. This is also good for large banquets.

Find another restaurant...

My colleagues and I ate at the restaurant and things tended to go smoothly until a large party across from us settled their bill. The Changsho staff argued loudly with them over the bill and a scene erupted in the restaurant.

Our party was given the bill before we were even done with dessert. Not five minutes after our dessert was finished, a staff member walked up to our table and picked up the bill only to SLAM it down on our table and tell us to pay it. Not two minutes later the server came back and reminded us to pay again. One person in our party was mid drink when a staff member took it out of her hand. It was clear we were being asked to leave.

Find another restaurant if you want to be treated properly.

Pros
+ Food is average-good, Good parking

Cons
- , RUDE STAFF, Cust. Svc stinks.

good place for sitting in without eating

This place may first impress you with the most elegant environment, like a chinese palace. However, after sitting in and eating the pricy food, you may find it is the atmospere that you are going to pay for not the food itself. If you have never been to China and want to experience the feeling of being in the Forbidden City without paying the air ticket, that's a good place to go. For anything else, try a better place.

Pros
+ , excellent environment

Cons
- , average food

Extremely poor...

I enjoy going out and trying new restaurants but would not recommend Changsho. Aside from the difficult parking on the opposite side of the road, the food was extremely overpriced and of poor quality. It wasn't until the bill came did we realize we were charged 7.50 to switch white rice to pork fried rice on the Combo meal. The pad thai was tasteful, but not at all like authentic thai food. The hostess was very bland and did not have much of a personality. I would not recommend this restaurant to family or friends. On the postive note the Peking Raviolis were delicious.

Best in Boston Beautiful Superb Dinner

First off I would like to say that Changso has the best parking spaces in Boston. I cannot tell you of another Chinese restaurant in Boston with clean, free, and easily acessible parking. I found a spot instantly for my minivan, and my family and I were able to actually get out of the car and into the restaurant within 5 minutes (a record). Their food is superb, the Crispy Peppery Shrimp has a tasty crunch and beatiful texture. The dining room is incredibly clean and the service is excellent. THe staff is very courteous and polite. I am so pleased with Changso. I think that I will take my faimly here over and over again. I have never been to a better Chinese restarant in my 3 years living here in Boston.

Pros
+ Parking, Service

Getting Worse...

This used to be one of my favorite Chinese restaurants, with an interesting menu, great service, and widely spaced tables. After Lotus Blossom Restaurant chain bought the place a number of years ago, almost all the interesting dishes disappeared from the menu. Beautiful vases on pedestals were replaced with more tables (although it is still a nice atmosphere, just not *as* nice), and the quality of the food became variable. It's just no longer worth it for me.

Pros
+ Off-street parking

Cons
- Mediocre food, Prices

I won't go there anymore

The restaurant looks fency, the service is good, but the high price doesn't reflect on the quality of food. It seems to me that the dishes are modified into American style instead of the authentic Chinese flavor. I'd rather go to Chinatown.

Cons
- expensive
