Oysters, oysters, oysters

I came here in 2004 while driving across the country. Sitting here at the bar eating freshly shucked oysters and drinking beer was one of the culinary highlights of the trip. I had a lot of good food on that trip so this is saying a lot. If you want oysters in New Orleans, you need to eat here, period.

2007 UPDATE - Dudes and dudettes, if there is a oyster and fried catfish heaven, it would be look like this. The clouds would part, and I would eat oysters and fried catfish. I went back here three years later and it was just as good. Screw the hype - it's good here.

best oysters

OK, Come on people...I have eaten raw oysters in Boston at Le Ole Union Oyster House, and they were pretty good. I have eaten them on the bay in San Francisco and they were good as well. But....ACME Oyster House in New Orleans beats them all!!!! First of all, the location...French Quarter..Hello???? Second, we took our 8 yr old son with us for dinner, and the line was long but moved very fast, even he didn't get restless. The staff was very friendly, and fast. The oyster were the best I ever had... I had a half dozen raw, and then I tried a half dozen grilled with some cheese on them...Man, that was nice... Third, you won't leave with an empty wallet!!!!!! If you love history and oysters, ACME Oyster House will be your best experience ever! Now go eat some raw oysters..

Horrible experience with Manager

This restaurant was recommended to me and so on Saturday (July 21, 2007) I went to dinner with my group. We totaled 8. The address is 724 Iberville St. The host was nice and we ate pretty well. Once we paid we were planning on going to Bourbon Street and it started to rain horribly. We thought we would have drinks at the bar inside the restaurant and the manager rudely told us we were taking up space and if we were not going to eat at the bar we could not just order drinks. We explained we had just eaten there and since it was raining we thought of having a drink. He said NO. So we stood by the door and he came after us and told us we had to leave the restaurant immediately. We asked if we could just stay until the rain stopped and he told us that if we wanted to we could walk to the next door garage but we must leave. We could not believe that with the rain he was just kicking us out. After all we had consumed over $150.00 five minutes prior. My father said he would leave once the rain stopped and so he called the police officer to kick us out. This experience was terrible. I could not believe he was the manager. He was so rude. Although the food was not bad, my managers attitude was unacceptable and in order to continue having some type of good reputation I believe management needs to be changed.

fried is good

i came here for lunch recently and had the 1/2 and 1/2 platter of fried catfish and shrimp. there really was nothing to complain about. the food was just perfectly done and not dry. the service was prompt; there was no line when i went (although there usually is -- we just got lucky). our server was also down to earth and friendly and helpful. too bad we couldn't get dessert because the huge servings left me too full.

Don't freak about the line to get in

ACME Oyster House is a local institution. There is always a line on the street to get in - but it moves fast. Sit at the bar and have a dozen raw oysters and a fried shrimp po-boy. We hit it a least twice on every trip.

Such a semi-famous name as Acme needs to serve a terrific po-boy but falls way short. I think most locals stopped going here around 1995. Fried oysters are dark brown / overcooked. If you must go, stick to the raw oysters and char grilled oysters and maybe some jambalaya and red beans. It's designed for the turistas nowadays. 2007 UPDATE: Post-storm Acme is back to GOOD again! Chargrilled oysters are fab. Would go back again and again.

Decor is simple and plain. Atmosphere is crowded and you'll probably be greeted by a long line during prime hours. However, the raw oysters are among the best I've had, fried seafood is excellent , the jambalaya is very worthy, and you can quench your thirst with a amazingly cold beer. Definitely worth the wait in line.

below average

Overall very disappointing!!! The new orleans sampler was not good at all, the gumbo and jambalaya did not taste good. The oyster shooters were terrible. The crawpuppies and raw oysters were good, fried food was average. I would not recommend going here for good culinary experience unless all you're going to eat is raw oysters.

Excellent Po'Boy and Crawpuppies

Boyfriend and I waited for about twenty minutes in a fast-moving line to be seated on a Thursday night at about seven thirty. We were waited on almost immediately after being seated, and our waitress was very friendly. We ordered a pitcher of Abita, crawpuppies, an oyster/shrimp po-boy, and a gumbo/creole/jambalaya mix plate. The crawpuppies were soooo good. The beer didn't come and didn't come, and the waitress came over to explain: the keg was being changed. Fine, and she took a dollar off the total. Fresh beer for us. The po'boy was really good, and the mix thing was the perfect amount of food. We did not have oysters but they were sizzling on a grill as we left and looked pretty tasty. I talked briefly with the manager and he was friendly, and did not seem bothered by my (dumb) questions about oysters.

The raw oysters are delicious, the po'boys are excellent, and the cold beer is very cold. At the French Quarter location go early or late - there will be a line at prime times. This is another place that is just as good post Katrina.

'THE' best place to eat oysters in the Quarter! We had 2 dozen
raw oysters followed by baked oysters with cheese on top, an oyster
poboy, red beans and rice and 2 orders of bread pudding! That was for
2 people!! The wait isn't that bad, but get there fairly early in
the late afternoon to avoid having to stand in line. We always eat at
the bar. Excellent eating!

Suffering Post-Katrina

This is my favorite place in New Orleans and has always been my first stop there for more than 30 years. However, on a visit there in May, I found that they were serving farm-raised oysters, which didn't come close to their usually succulent stuff. While this is understandable, given the wipeout of the N.O. coast, it ooes take the edge off my traditional Acme meal. Gimme some of those juicy Apalachicolas and things will be right again.

Your average tourist trap! If you like Red Lobster, this place is right up your alley. Please don't judge Louisiana seafood by eathing here, it's not very representative.

It's Okay

As a locale for a tourist this isn't a bad place to go...If you are a raw oyster lover it's an excellant place to go. It has local color, serves locale specialities and is located in the quarter within the section of town that most toursit find appealing...Most local neighborhood spots serve larger portions and most locals can whip up a better gumbo or red beans or slap together a better po-boy...but the prices aren't outrageous, the beer is cold and it's a kewl place to go..authentic . The trick with everything these days(after Katrina) is whether any of the serving staff returned..it's tough to work when you have no where to live...doubtful that you'll get any of the locals to be your waiters these days and for many years to come until people can sort out their lives a bit...and maybe be able to return to something remotely similiar to the way things were

We were there last month and had a great time! The oysters almost melt in your mouth and the shuckers at the oyster bar just kept throwing free ones at us. Just excellent!
