I have lived in the anthem for 3 years, was actually not my choice but my company's. This building is one of the good ones in Murray Hill but definitely not the best. As for the standard of excellence this is a real farce specially when it comes to management. The management attitude and performance is way below professional. The property manager deals with you in such an arrogant and authoritative way as if he is running a high school. The property management staff have not even heard of the word "decency' or "dignity" or "respect". As a tenant you are treated like a second class citizen with no rights or privileges. The rules of the building change so often that you can't keep track of anything. The never post the new rules or inform anyone of them. One piece of advise if you ever have to live in this building... don't except any professionalism/decency or even respect from management. the only professional staff in this building are the handymen.Seriosuly, go live anywhere else.

I have been living here for a year and I resigned only out of sheer hatred against moving. The management in this building is rude and entirely incompetent. While the staff, doormen, and maintenance workers are wonderful the management is a nightmare. We had brown water, and despite management's denial, still have brown water. When it started, I had granules of brown particles covering my entire body after my shower (they looked like mud). Management claims it is oxidized iron but prolonged exposure to anything like that cannot be good. The tenants are nice overall, it is definitely a dorm like lifestyle. The ceilings and counters are not well made and are already cracking. I can't wait to leave the building and I wouldn't recommend it anyone.

I have noticed a deterioration in quality of life at the Anthem. The post college, Murray hill crowd is blasting music and treating the building as the Jersey shore. People also use the roof to let their dog poo. The water often shuts off without warning (lovely after you place shampoo in your hair, toilets clog weekly and bedbugs are now found crawling between apartments. The manager is also legendary for his tact with the apartment owners. (read other coments please) On the bright side, the doormen are very polite and helpful.

We have lived here since 2004, the building opened in 2003. ----, the manager, has made it extremely difficult for us to move, because he knows we have a child. We have paid the rent on time, but every year he has put our rent up by several hundred rdollars. We are living in a one bedroom, but paying for a two. While others have somehow managed to negotiate their rents and have them lowered, he has increased ours.We joined the gym in the building, but he continuously told us that we had not paid our dues and could not get access. Then when we finally did get access for about a week, we could not get back into the gym again. Nothing ever works. The hallways are always dirty. They used to clean the hallways every day and now almost never. There are roaches in the hallways, some neighbors have bedbugs and we have had a problem of brown/dirty/rusty water and we were informed it was safe to bathe with and drink. When one of my neighbors took a glass of water to give to ----, the manager, to drink he would not drink it. We have a small baby too, and he believes the water is safe. He is a liar. The water is often not available in the morning, and if it is, it is cold. The heat is turned off during the day, because ---- claims the wind hits the building in a direction which interferes with the heating system. Go figure, that does not even make sense.----, the manager, is very rude and crappy. He has been in our apartment without our permission, claiming it was an emergency. I was at home with my baby when he came in and I started screaming. This man is dangerous.I have told my partner that I cannot take living here anymore, and am contemplating just leaving the building. We have called 311 almost 25 times, and nothing is being done.We had water damage caused by their leaking pipes, and we had to pay for the damage to our own perosnal property when it was their fault. The building looks nice, the doormen are great, but your life will honestly be miserable. We have no problem braking our lease, and if ----/Anthem comes after us, so be it. We are not giving him anymore money unless the courts force us too. Also, there are cracks in the walls and the floors are very uneven. Finally, our personal information such as social security and e-mail was given to this weird woman in the building. Then we found out that most people in the buildign had experienced the same thing. We were getting spammed all the time from this woman, it was crazy. We complained to ----, and he said he does not know how that happened. He did not investigate and nor did he apologize. The leasing management company are just very rude too. When you go to them with a problem, they just tell you to go to ----. It is a horrible cycle that we get put through. My partner and I promise you that you will not be happy here, and you will be complaining within a matter of days, and no-one will be able to help you. Save yourself the hassle and misery and find something else.

I currently live in The Anthem. It is not the, "standard of excellence," as stated on the website. The building provides steam heat. Temperature can be controlled only when it's pumped out. NYS law requires the bldg. to be kept at 68 degrees when it falls below 55 during the day and just 55 degrees when it falls below 40 at night. The Anthem sent all tenants an email--at the start of the winter--explaining that they would adhere to state heat minimums. They were not kidding. The heat shuts off daily at exactly 10 pm. If the window is cracked at that time it quickly becomes freezing inside. If the heater is left at the "on" setting past 10 pm, the tenant will be rudely awakened--by a drastic temperature change--at 6am when the heat reactivates. This week it was 32 degrees outside and there was no heat at night. The apt. fell far below room temperature with the window sealed. It would have to be about 18 degrees outside for it to fall below the landlord-favoring state minimum of 55 indoors. This may equate to almost no heat at night all winter. Tenants do not expect to wake in the middle of the night to 59 degrees, cold floors and bitterness in the air. A premium is paid to live here and nightly heat is expected. I am requesting that the heat be kept on when the temperature falls below 40 degrees at night without exception. Friends and family are shocked about loss of heat at night in the winter. We are relying on insulation for warmth. If a bed is near the window it is extra cold. The heat is always on during the day when it falls below 55. That may be to showcase the building and keep management warm. This is not my only gripe with The Anthem. The manager runs things like a prison warden. He is as-cold-as-ice just like the building. That's why I chose this public forum. The Anthem should listen to my reasonable request of keeping the heat activated when it's below 40 degrees at night. I may post more negative reviews and blogs that can nest highly on search engines. If the problem is addressed it will be reflected in an update.

I see a lot of bad reviews on here about the building manager, -----------. Well, I've met the guy and it's obvious why everyone (probably all old dudes) has their panties in a twist about him: the guy is a Golden God! Sure he's a little quiet, but I've always found him to be professional, considerate and fair. Of course, my last building manager looked like Icabod Craine so I may be a little more vulnerable to his charms than you guys. P.S. To those of you whining about the sirens from the ambulances on 34th St., please leave NYC forever and don't come back.

In helping a family member move into The Anthem a month ago, I could not have been more impressed with the professionalism and courtesy of the management as well as the expertise, vigilence, and courtesy of the 24/7 security staff and the efficiency of the custodial/moving staff. Moreover, I arrived armed with mops, cleaners, and elbow grease fully prepared to give my family member's relatively tiny but lovely broom-closed sized abode the white glove cleaning treatment. Imagine my delight to discover that the move-in condition of his apartment was literally so clean that nary a ball of dust nor a smidgeon of dirt/grime was to be found (and believe me: at the prices of the NYC rentals, this relative was prepared to find something to justify a "God, this rent is outrageous" kind of comment.) In short, the place is professionally managed, courteously, safely and efficiently accommodating of its residents and their guests, and immaculate! Very sincerely,An Upstate NY Relative odusyNYCcZ7yL3Bj5JtG

I love this place, and consider myself lucky to have found it. I feel extremely safe in the building and around the neighborhood, and love the location.

I did not live in this building because ----'s arrogance turned me away. I had the displeasure of meeting him while I was checking out some apartments in the building and I must say, he was the coldest, rudest, most sarcastic man I ever met. It was almost as if he wanted us to leave the building immediately. Not once did he crack a smile the whole time we conversed. When I mentioned the prospect of negotiating, I think steam came out of his ears. I could tell something was off about him, so I Googled him. This site confirms my accusations. I would never do business with a man like that.DO NOT TRUST HIM.

I have been living in this building for over three years and cannot wait for my lease to end this summer so I can move. This building is all smoke and mirrors- it looks beautiful but the building is made like crap. The walls crack, the cabinets in the kitchen aren't even real wood, people smoke in the hallways and stairways and the building is poorly maintained. The building manager ----------- is the worst. It is astounding that he even has a job since he does NOTHING and is hated by the tenants and the staff. He is rude, dumb and completely ineffective that you have to wonder what his connection is to the owner of Rosebud associates or what does he have on them. He is a waste. Its sad that in todays economy with so many people out of work that he actually has a job. If you ever need anything done here good luck - he will only cause you problems.

We lived there for nearly five years, and first I would say living in the Anthem and dealing with the aforementioned constant BS seriously tainted our experience in NYC for the negative. The Anthem is ideal for recent college graduates, as well as people who shop at International Male and the women who date them. We used to joke that living there was like living in a Miami Beach Hotel, without the weather or the beach. The lowdown; north facing apts completely unlivable as far as I am concerned, with the constant high volume street noise, you live above a tunnel entrance. The NYPD takes daily "practice runs" with at times up to 100 polices cars traveling in a line, all with their sirens fully audible. This happens anytime during the day and weekends. It is insane to see at first, but "you will just get used to it." There is consistent utility work on the street below the Anthem, so it was common to be awakened on the weekend(yes, Sat & Sunday Morning 7AM) by the sound of blaring jackhammers. And this doesn't even take into consideration the street traffic, as it is a tunnel entrance, it is always packed with cars. When you open your windows, your apartment will smell like car exhaust. We lived on a higher floor, and this was the case. I am still amazed I lived like this for five years.Combine this with the management, and you have a miserable living experience. Apparently the building manager, Paul, is an investors son, so nepotism is why this guy has his job. Lucky for him, it explains how he never had to learn to deal with people. Consequently the doormen really tried to be nice and helpful. They were always pleasant and helpful, but always kept under strict rules by management. This always put them in a bind, and they were always in fear of losing their jobs. The day we moved in they were protesting the building management, we actually had to walk through a picket line of doormen when we were moving in. Add; consistently BROWN WATER, near daily. So, in short, this building sucks, and is way overpriced. We were unaware that we could live much better in manhattan, because we did not take the time to look, we moved to NYC fairly quickly for work. If you are new to the city, take the time to look. If you live here, you probably will already avoid Murray Hill.

Horrible, horrible building!!!

I have no problem with the actual leasing office, however potential renters of this building BEWARE. \r
\r
Paul Athens, the building manager, is a nightmare. He is virtually ineffective when it comes to getting anything done (even though he had unsuccessfully tried to evict my husband and I from our apartment, he took 3 days to come and inspect the apartment when we finally decided to leave, and that was something he wanted. Now imagine if you need him to do something he doesn't want to do), he is not above playing games with tenants he doesn't like, and sadly he is not above bad-mouthing former tenants. He terrorized us into leaving the building and then he targeted the people he knew to be our friends, and he did all of this because when he keyed into our apartment without our knowledge and we just happened to be home, we called the police and had it explained to him that this was illegal behavior. \r
\r
My husband and I are good people and we did nothing to deserve this. We are both doctors, we have been married for 7 years, and we have never had an experience with any other building be as bad as with this one. I know our case sounds extreme, but sadly it is not. Don't say you weren't warned.

Pros
+ It is a beautiful building

The owners close the common space (lounge with large screen tv and pool table) which we are paying to have access to, for their own use whenever they want. Yet residents can not reserve the space for their own use. It is ridiculous when they can rent any space in Manhattan for their party.

Too musch noise, No hot water, and awful manager. If you have time to wait in the morning to let the water run for half an hour before it warms up, and you love disasterous amount of noise that doesn't allow you to fall sleep then this may be the right apt for you. I have called and emailed manager numerous times about the hot water situation.. not once has he responded back. You would think for $3300 monthly rent.. you would get better service.. but not here.
