An alternative dining experience

We've dined at the Tokyo Wako in Arcadia (on Huntington) and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. So, when we dined at the Pasadena location for the first time last month for my two nieces' graduation dinner, we had high expectations. This location is in the busy Paseo Colorado complex, and unless you know the place like the back of your hand, you might find yourself walking all over just to find the restaurant -- which was what happened to us. On this evening, there were 13 of us dining and we shared our 2 teppan "tables" with two other diners. Our chefs, although very talented, were not near the mastery level of those who entertained and cooked for us at the Arcadia location. My scallops were overcooked despite my attempts at encouraging our chef to take them off the grill sooner than he did. My sushi order was placed on the same dish as someone who was seated 4 seats away. We took turns eating our sushi, passing the plate back and forth. (Not the most pleasant experience.) Despite the late hour (about 8:30pm) the restaurant was full and staff scurried around. The staff was friendly, although seeming a little scattered at times. Overall, the experience was just average. Nothing to rave about...or to completely pan.

Pros
+ lots of seating

Cons
- parking lot is insane

Wrong Order, Overcharged, Rude Waitress

I liked the food, the teppan chefs were nice, but the waitress was terrible. My order was wrong, I was overcharged, and they didn't care. I would not recommend this restaurant. The wait staff is either poorly trained or terribly managed.

Horrible service, Rude Staff-Don't come here.

Tokyo Wako has incredibly rude servers and staff that does not seem to understand the definition of customer service. Our server didn't get our order correct, gave us an incorrect bill, and brought our food out late-some of us were served much later than others at the table. I'm not talking about one or two things wrong-I'm talking about messing up the entire order-wrong rolls, wrong sushi, and then taking FOREVER to address the mistake and get the correct food out on the table. The server was incredibly flippant about all of the issues and they just kept getting worse and worse throughout the course of the dinner. The manager was hardly sympathetic to the fact that they literally did not get a single thing right throughout the course of the meal. This place is a joke-don't waste your money.

Worst Sushi Experience of My Life

DON'T EAT HERE UNLESS YOU WANT HORRIBLE SERVICE, COLD FOOD, ILL-PREPARED SUSHI -NOT TO MENTION FOOD THAT WAS LEFT BEHIND BY OTHER CUSTOMERS. I had been a loyal Tokyo Wako customer since it opened. Due to changes in restaurant management, I will not come back here EVER AGAIN-and I'm NOT a picky complainer when it comes to restaurants. I went there last night and the service was beyond horrible. We asked for sushi with wasabi and they informed us that none of their sushi came with wasabi. WHAT??!!! We then asked, "Oh, in that case, would you mind putting some on for us?" The waiter snapped "I have been working here for 2 years and we have never put wasabi on sushi." First, that is completely incorrect-I've been there multiple times in the last few years and sushi always came with wasabi. Second, why not just please the customer and add wasabi? Third, what kind of sushi place refuses to put wasabi on sushi? Then the sushi came-without wasabi. We asked for wasabi AGAIN and when the sushi was returned, it had these bizarre little pea-shaped lumps of wasabi placed ON TOP of the fish! Do these people know ANYTHING? Not only that, but our tea was cold, they got our orders incorrect (gave us the wrong roll), forgot some items from our order, and our food was completely late (some items came out more than 45 MINUTES after other people at our table was served). We asked to speak with the manager, who was extremely rude and didn't even credit us the COLD unagi brought to our table after an hour of waiting. When we asked to have a refund on the unagi because we had to leave to catch a flight, the waiter said, "Only if I can re-sell the fish." WHAT? And HOW DISGUSTING IS THAT? Everyone at our table let out an audible cry of disbelief. DO NOT GIVE THIS RESTAURANT YOUR BUSINESS.

Pros
+ In the Paseo

Cons
- EVERYTHING ELSE

Mediocre Food, CRAPPY SERVICE

We went here after a seeing a movie next door - it was 9:30pm on a Saturday and not too crowded. We ordered an appetizer, I ordered an entree & my wife ordered 2 sushi rolls. Our appetizer and my entree came out together about 15 minutes later. The app was OK, but my yakitori was cold and flavorless. 10 minutes later, my wife's sushi still had not arrived. We asked the waiter, who said it would be just a minute. I asked if they could heat my dinner up, our waiter said "sure". HALF AN HOUR LATER, we still had not seen either the sushi or my entree again (or our waiter, for that matter). We gave up and asked if we could just pay for what we had - and they CHARGED ME for the dinner that I asked them to reheat and never saw again - $20 for two bites of what tasted like cold ramen. I would not recommend this place to anybody looking for quality food or a decent dining experience. Too many good alternatives in Pasadena to waste your money or your time.

Pros
+ Close to movie theater

Cons
- Terrible Service, Sub-par food

Tokyo Wack

Came here while waiting for a movie, and it was not pleasant. The space looks big but the layout is poor and just looks like your in a hotel lobby with a sushi bar. The prices are expensive and the food was so so. The sushi was horrible, ordered Sushi Tuna and the Tuna was RED, and not a good red. Tasted fishy and i couldnt finish for fear of food poisoning. The soup was okay, but for the price i could have gone to any of my 3 favorite sushi places and had more quality and better food.... Next time ill walk over to the express chinese place... Dont think they will stay long if thats how the food is going to continue.

Enjoyed It

We went for dinner. Sat at the hibachi grill. Enjoyed the mini show. Chef was funny. We had the filet mignon and shrimp combo - really good. The wine was good. We enjoyed ourselves. The atmoshpere was fun. It's like a glorified Beni Hanas but I think the quality is more high end. I have also been to the one in Arcadia. This one seems better.

Pros
+ atmosphere, food, chefs

Cons
- can get crowded, not for sushi

Not worth the money

After walking around Pasadena my husband and i decided to try this restraunt and were lured in by the atmosphere. Much to our dismay we found the food to be average or below. The Tempura Calamari was so thick... Calimari normally is thin and in circles. This was thick, chewy, and overall overwhelming. The "Jumbo Scallops" were merely quarter-sized, not nearly even close to Jumbo. I'd pass on this Japanese place and try Sushi of Naples instead... sounds like it should be italian but it's great sushi and entrees.... this place just doesn't add up!

Pros
+ Atmosphere, Prompt Seating, Habachi Grill

Cons
- Prices, Food, Shushi

First time and the last time.

Tokyo Wacko has a very nice setting and the service was great. The food was expensive, yet the outcome was not so great. To watch them cook in front of you was fascinating but there was no taste in the food. I would not come here again.
