The sushi is always great. However, I was charged $50 for one order of grilled octopus, one order of salmon sashimi, and one order of cut roll toro. I know the octopus is expensive but come on. I have been there many times and had twice as much for the same price. I didn't even order alcohol this time. It used to be a secret and now since the Hollywood Big shots go there, they are starting to overcharge. Vince Vaughn once took my table from me there! They also don't itemize their bills and get upset if you ask them to or ask for an explanation. Used to be a secret, now it has prices that rival Katana and Koi, except Ike has no atmosphere. It is a dump with no seating or parking. At least at the Beverly Hills joints you get some service and a bill with consistent prices. Be prepared to pay $50 per person. The basic sushi was excellent, and our vegetable tempura was also fine. But, my personal favorite, the 'spicy tuna handroll' was about 1/2 the size of the usual serving and nothing special inside. Because it was so small and the same price as elsewhere, this became even more expensive sushi meal than usual for us. The only reason we went there was that it's close to the Pantages and we were in a hurry. She told me that we had to get there around 5:30pm since it gets crowded quickly. When I saw that it was in a busy mini-mall in Hollywood, I was more than a little skeptical. The location isn't hip, trendy or anything you'd expect from the best sushi in L.A.. Once inside, I immediately forgot about my negative impressions of the exterior and I was quickly swept back to the days when I was living in Tokyo. There is no other restaurant that reminds me of the authentic world class sushi I experienced in Japan. Everything from the melt in your mouth toro, exceptionally sweet uni to the fresh hamachi was delicious! But more than the ingredients was the way the sushi was prepared. I think this is what makes the difference. Ike-san not only uses the best quality ingredients but he is a master sushi chef with a gift. He has created quite a name for himself amongst the Japanese community and those who know really good sushi. Since then, I have been there a number of times and have yet to be disappointed. While the sushi is good, the owner has managed to treat me in such a way which prevents me from returning. At one point I was a regular customer who spent a fair amount there and was never tight on tipping. When dining alone, I do not enjoy having a table to myself, but do enjoy sitting a sushi bars where I don?t feel so obvious and can chat to other diners. One evening I was doing just that. I had already eaten a fair amount of sushi. I ordered another plate and told Ike that I was just going to my car to get something and would eat it upon my return. He told me that he would serve it, but I had to move to a table where a Japanese family of three were already seated as there were people waiting and the seat next to me was vacant. I looked at the family and realized that they would no more enjoy having an outsider sit next to them than I would enjoy sitting with a group of non-English speaking strangers. He would never ever yell at one of his valued customers like the last reviewer says he did. Ike is always very accomadating, constantly smiling, goes to lengths to make his guests feel very welcome, and is ALWAYS extremely gracefully grateful. I can't say that about other traditional, or semi-tradiotional, sushi restaurants in the neighboring areas. If you're looking for fancy rolls covered in eel sauce, you should find another spot. This is a place where the modest menu doesn't rely on extravagance. My wife and I went to this restaurant the other night and we were served the worst piece of mackerel I've ever tasted. As soon as I put it in my mouth I gagged. I have sushi all the time and I know that some is just better and fresher than others but this was that rare piece that's just old, chewy and disgusting. It's simply food that no restaurant should serve. We politely asked the waitress to remove the mackerel from our table and our bill (we ordered 4 pieces initially) at which point she said something to the sushi chef who immediately started yelling at us from across the restaurant. We were totally shocked and I actually agreed to pay for the awful sushi just to get him to stop yelling. He stopped for a moment and then started again. It was seriously unbelievable. Any other restaurant in town would be EMBARRASSED to serve food that nasty. The sickness I experienced that night confirmed everything I feared about the fish they served. The raw oysters are great too, wash it down with some cold Sake. One thing you can't get at Ike is the ultra lame American style sushi like Dynamite rolls, Caterpillar rolls or any other roll with cream cheese in it. If you want to look like an amateur, order the California Roll - the only non-Japanese item on the menu. Ike is real deal, simple, traditional Japanese sushi. The iced green tea is complimentary as are the warm towels. It is so authentic that one of Ike's regular customers is Sho Kosugi - the ninja turned actor and star of all those awesome ninja movies of the 80's. The counter also offers a slightly seared samon sushi that they don't serve for the tables. The clam soup is also a nice touch to stray from the usual plain miso.
