I have seen some great therapists and counsellors, and have a highly competent one right now, but the psychologist I saw at Sharp was more like a mentally ill person than the average person I meet. She made a sudden diagnosis of me, based on no substantive data whatsoever, that was the EXACT OPPOSITTE of my current diagnosis, and the observations of numerous therapists, counsellors, and family members. This struck me as bizarre. When I politely questioned her as to why she would think this, she became agitated, defensive, and then listed several things -- none of which seemed to have any basis in reality. \r \r For example, she mentioned that I was ""impulsive"", then couldn't give me any reason for why she thought that at all, while any of the dozens of family members, friends, doctors, and therapists I've seen over the past 40 years would ALL assure you that I have the EXACT OPPOSITTE issue -- I tend to think far too long and deeply about things before making decisions. I have heard people say a lot of things about me, but I have NEVER heard another human being refer to me as ""impulsive"" in my entire life. I have many problems that I'm working on, with the aid of competent counsellors, but being impulsive isn't one of them. They refuse to deal with anyone that is not just depressed. Do NOT go in there if you are manic cause they have no clue how to help you and ignore you. They have physically damaged me by ignoring it when I fell. They lied saying it was the medication that caused me to be unable to pass a basic neurological exam when it was actually a fall that had happened after I had fallen once and told them. I finally remembered what had happen a year later about the week I had missed of my life. I have been kidnapped from day treatment. They have lied about me and to me. They claimed I had written a suicide note but couldn't produce it and threw me in ICU on a three day hold. I was in there once in some totally weird place in my head and had no clue what was going on and they refused to talk to me for three days because they ""didn't like my tone of voice"". I have many other stories but that should suffice. The nurses were fantastic, it was super clean and the food was decent. The rest of the doctors are superb and treat people very respectfully.... overall very professional ( I have heard horror stories about Aurora ). My one concern, although they are the experts with ECT, they tend to reccomend this a lot,,, and the side effects can be a lot worse than explained,,, I have known at least 3 people who got very ill after these treatments .... you can get aspiration pneumonia,,,, lose your memory for a lot longer than they explain...as a neurologist said,,, it can take several months not weeks for short term memory to return.... BUT they SAVE a LOT of LIVES, are considerate and I highly recommend this facility!!!!! I was forced to sign documents that grossly misrepresented important facts. The one time I refused an injection, my mother was called (I was 50 years old, and have no record of mental problems/illness.) as if I could not be trusted to make my own decision in the matter. I was released in three days, with no diagnosis - I am sane. But I cannot get my records. The staff is good but some of the doctors really push ECT. It's a huge money-maker for the doctors and the hospital. There was one doctor in particular and some of the staff who were comfortable with expressing anti-gay sentiments. Also, one of the doctors routinely fell asleep during my sessions with him. At the end of the session he would tell me how much better I seemed to be. How am I supposed to trust the advise from someone who has lost any credibility? The hospital also pushes Cognitive therapy. They have repackaged it and now call it "Dialectic Therapy." Same information, new name. (It's an old marketing technique.) If you want support in thinking "happy thoughts" to distract yourself from real issues, Cognitive therapy is exactly what you need. One last thing, it's all about the money. It was not incredibly fancy, but im thoroughly amused by addicts who expect the hilton when they check into detox. I was taken great care of, the staff kept their distance in order to accomodate for those who needed privacy, yet upon any request, more care was provided, from medical needs addressed, to open arms and company with an understanding ear to offer. I was impressed with the staff, they were very friendly and personable, willing to talk, give advice, comfort, and take care of any other needs. As long as you are willing to ask, you will be given any care that you need. This was not my first stay in detox, I stayed at the Scripps McDonald Center, and i found that though the accomodations were not as new and of a lesser quality, I was impressed with the service provided. I would recommend this facility for those seeking treatment. one small warning: no smoking. though i was able to have a few and when the staff noticed, i was not kicked out, I was given the option for a patch or gum, and was left alone. These people are willing to look the other way in this respect, which is nice, considering most haver much greater problems to tackle. Unless youre stuck up and expect the Betty Ford center or a luxury hotel, Sharp Mesa Vista will get you healthy, and will provide you with many options for your discharge from the facility. I went to visit each day. I would not send my worst enemy to stay there. The floor my loved one stayed on was coed. There was no security roaming the floor any time I was there. Mentally challenged people were poking their heads in my loved ones room all night. Can you say ""possibility for bodily harm or worse""? 95% of the nurses and staff were extremely RUDE and cold. I personally saw how impatient, short tempered and down-right mean they are to the patients, including my loved one. I personally saw them ignore many patients, including my loved one. They even treated me this way. I bit my lip and did not say anything to them because I was afraid they would take it out on my loved one the second I walked out the door. Which they did a little anyway. There is no reason any human being should be treated in such a way. I also experienced a high level of incompetence. The staff is very opaque about billing and what things cost, and the expense seems hard to justify given the bare bones quality of the facilities. As a visitor, I was able to walk into any patient's room, and I stood in a treatment area for 15 minutes without anyone asking me who I was or whether I need help.
