On the decline...

The Westside market, once a Cleveland instituation and hidden gem, is plagued with shady produce stands. While the inside retains all of its glory the outside produce stands are mostly buyer beware anymore. There are very rare exceptions such as the organic stand and potato/onion stand and a couple other down that particular smaller row that goes I think north/south (if you have been there you know the aisle I am talking about. The potato/onio stand has been in the same place for 20 years, not the main strip). The fruit sold is the same as you could get in the day old bins at the local grocery store now. It is ripe or a couple days over ripe and even though the deals are exception most of the fruit will go to waste if not eaten the same day or the very next day. It is so sad to see the old generations that worked their butts off in the early days of the market being lumped into this catagory but it is what it is. I would rather pay more at the grocery store, Whole Foods, or even Trader Joe's than throw my money away on bad merchandise. Sorry to say West Side Market, for nostalgia I give you a 10, but it is sad to say it is buyer beware at most of the produce stands and for that I give you a big zero. If you do go make sure to pick out your own fruit and vegetables or else you may very well be scammed.

Pros
+ Inside, meats, cheeses, bakery, fish, poulty, spices, grains, coffee shop

Cons
- Outside produce stands

I visited the West Side Market on 3/26/2008. I am visiting from Los Angeles, California and found the market to be a unique mix of cultures that I am not normally exposed to which is what made it such an awesome experience. There is a loft like area towards the front of the market where you can sit, eat your...

This is one of my favorite spots in Cleveland. I love to walk and listen to all of the different accents. Some of my favorite spots to shop are 1) Pierogi Palace - be sure to get a wide selection and serve them at your next party 2) Ohio Pasta - Great selection of all types of handmade pastas 3)...

I live approximately 1 ¾ hours away from the West Side Market and every time we go to Cleveland I try to visit the market. We don’t have anything like it in our town so it’s a different experience for us. The architecture is great with the brick floors and extremely high ceiling. The layout of the vendors is nice...

I have always enjoyed the variety of fresh produce. The meat is fresh and the cheeses are very good also. The tradition of courteous service at the market place is especially nice.
Thanks and Hearty Blessing From God For Safety and Cleanliness To All!

I visited the market on a cold, dreary day and didn't expect crowds, but the place was packed! I was impressed with the variety of vendors (sausage, smoothies, strudel, etc.) and the quality of their goods (many bakeries had very elaborately decorated cakes and pies). I should have bought the Guinness Stout cake when I had the chance, because they...

Not that great

From reading reviews of the place, I really expected much better. Yes, the building itself is a beautiful, historic structure (love the carved-stone steer head on the cornice) and the stalls inside were filled with wonderful displays of meats, cheeses, breads, cakes, pies, etc. but the real "downer" was the produce stalls. The displays were neat and beautiful, but I...

A Cleveland Must-See

This place really takes you back in time, or to another part of the world. This grand indoor market, was completed in 1912 in Beaux Arts style architecture. Its tall clock tower defines the skyline of Cleveland's western banks along the Cuyahoga. This is definately the top spot for people-watching in the city. Its bustling atmosphere crowded with all different...

You can't beat the produce prices with a stick, and the availibility of old-world style meats is out of this world! For a taste of "old school" Cleveland, this is the place.

This place is a national treasure. It is one of the last traditional markets still operating as a market in this country. Of the ones I've been to, it is the best except for Pike Street in Seattle. I did not understand the previous review's comment on the parking, since there are two large, free lots adjacent to the facility. I have a large family (6 kids), and I depend on this market for keeping my food bill down. Fruit and vegetables are appox. 50% less than the local supermarkets and other stuff (except milk for some reason) is usually about 20% less. The building also includes the best place to buy seafood in town (Nautilus). I would stay away from the other seafood stands. The vendors in this place are independent operators. Some stands have been around for as much as 3 generations. Needless to say, the quality and price varies considerably. To benefit you must compare stands. This is a great place for tourists to visit. Tour buses usually stop here on Saturdays. Cleveland is still an immigrant town, and you get an incredible variety of different foods here. It is a lot of fun to shop here.
