Up until this past spring it was our favorite "special occasion" restaurant. We told everyone how great the food and the ambience was. Enough so, that my sister-in-law bought us a $75 gift certificate for my husbands birthday in January. We planned on going in May (taking some out of town friends) but when we called to make the reservations we were told the restaurant had become a CAFE earlier in the year. Why wasn't my sister-in-law told that before she purchased the certificate. We went somewhere else that night & planned on going another night (our meeting anniversary date in August) to find out just how much it changed & to see how many trips it would take to use our $75 certificate. In August we called to make another reservation and as I spoke to the manager saw that our $75 gift certificate, which was paid for with a credit card had "EXPIRED" (very small print on the bottom that I had not noticed before because of the certificate being in an envelope). How can something purchased with a credit card expire?? In less than a year??? I have never heard of that. I called the "cafe" manager, I called the manager of the food/beverage department and emailed. The two managers said they were sorry but that was their policy and they said all the hotel/casino's do it. I have never had that happen before at any restaurant on the Strip or downtown. So, that is when I emailed and they didn't even give me the courtesy to answer it. We will never visit the Great Moments Room or the Vegas Club again. We have told all our friends about what happened (none has ever heard of a gift certificate expiring in 6 months). And I'm telling it here. I've been there...done that. The only things I might want to experience in that area of town are the new gourmet restaurants. I don't need to stay in a hotel on the Strip for that...in fact...if I did, I probably couldn't afford to dine in the restaurants. The Vegas Club offers week rates of less than $50/night...and why not take advantage of that? You can valet your car and take cabs to the Strip. No need to worry about avoiding the copious amounts of alcohol they push on you as you're gambling...simply take a cab back to downtown. If you're a casino hopper, the Vegas Club is a good choice. Within EASY walking distance, there are at least a 1/2 dozen (probably more) decent casinos in which to play. Granted, some of them have been around for decades and retain their "smokers allowed" smell...but in the mid-morning to early-afternoon hours, casinos are generally less crowded. For me, it's a good choice. We've stayed at the Vegas Club several times. Most recently, just this past weekend. They are definitely tightening their belt, as they no longer have an upscale/fine dining restaurant. They have only their cafe where you can have a decent breakfast, lunch or dinner. I recommend their French Dip sandwich made with prime rib and the best au jus I've ever had. The full size chopped salad was delicious but too big for me. Unless 2-3 people are sharing it, I would try the 1/2 serving. Also, this past weekend, we caught them in the middle of upgrading their amenities. Some of the rooms our friends and family stayed in had new irons/ironing boards, clocks, hair dryers, coffeemakers, etc...but some of the rooms contained none of those things. Hopefully next time, I won't have to use my cell phone as an alarm clock. The hotel is really nice for the price esp. the newly renovated south tower very comfortable, very spacious. The only downfall is that it is in downtown not many people want to be in downtown they would rather be on the strip but if that is not a problem this is a great hotel to stay in. You really don't expect to sleep in luxury in downtown so I don't really count that against them. The casino area though is very small and a bit shady looking. Generally their sports book is just an area where there's one projection TV on the wall and a few side TVs here and there. In general this place is not the nicest place to gamble or stay at, but it's a fun place to go to for a little break from all the other casinos. This is an older hotel but it has charm. The casino is done in a sports theme. It is a lot of baseball. I really enjoyed looking at the sports memorbelia around the casino. There are a lot of hard to find items that are showcased here. Autographed sports paraphernalia, good beer and legal betting. Rooms are Hilton-like, but the real treat is the casino where two things stand out. First, unlike other casinos, they offer a wide assortment of beers free at the table. While most casinos offer 3 major brands, they have microbrews! Yeah, you can sometimes getem elsewhere if you pay for em, but were not in Vegas to pay for beer. Know what Im sayin? Their beers run the gamut from local to craft beers. Not even the Strip Casinos can match the selection. We drank bock beer... Rumor is that if youre staying here and you request a certain beer, theyll get it. Second, blackjacklow-limits and "The- Most-Liberal-Rules-in-Vegas Split as many times as you want, double down after 2+ cards. 4-3-2-2double-down Baby! And they even pay sixcard Charlie...6 cards no bust, you automatically win.. The best thing about this sports oriented casino and hotel is a donated unique private bat collection Some dude spent his life collecting signed bats from all the greatest players and they are mounted on a wall behind acrylic, but you can spin the bat to see all the signatures. The whole sports theme is very interesting, and gives you something to look at and learn about while eating your late night special in the Upper Deck. After 11:30p.m. you can order a t-bone and egg special for $2.99... and it is very good. Pretty basic rooms, not a minibar or a hairdryer, but we gort a cheap as chips deal of about £21 for the night (would be about £33 given the rate of exchange one year later - written May 2009). There are deals for this hotel on kelkoo, expedia, the usual places. Big and comforrtable rooms, your bargain basement deal will land you in the North Tower - I understand that the South Tower has been refurbished a bit better. We were 4 nights in Vegas and decided to do 3 hotels in 4 nights, hence the single night stay was planned. Easrt end of Fremont Street at the end of the strip (Las Vegas Boulevard), Great base for the Fremont Streeet experience - see elsewhere Great Momemtns cafe did a wonderful breakfast - looking at the website Great Moments cafe may have been re-branded.
