Staff Is Terrible! Go to Canter's Delicatessen Instead!!

Terrible staff!!!

2 different and equally awful experiences being ignored while waiting for service. Atmosphere is cramped (restaurant is very narrow!) so it isn't as though waiting for service is even enjoyable in that setting. Miserable!

Also: Expensive. No fries.

I suggest Canter's nearby on Fairfax - the food is much much better. We also love Factors Deli on Pico, as they are very consistent on staff and food. Factor's has the nicest dining area of all 3 restaurants, very posh for a delicatessen.

Avoid Greenblatt's. Even the wine selection can not make up for the disorganized and snooty staff.

Pros
+ None - the bad service overshadows everything else

Cons
- Staff, cramped and narrow dining area, and no fries!

learn how not to cook

I actually tried a Greenblatt's corned beef sandwich once and liked it. Problem is, I can't ever get the one I liked again. I don't like hot sandwiches, so I keep asking them if it's possible to get a cold corned beef, and they keep telling me they can't do that. It's pretty easy. Just don't cook it! They serve chicken salad sandwiches. Do the same thing, only replace the chicken salad with corned beef! The fact that they will hold the heat for some people, but not for me, gives me the impression they aren't very concerned about customer sevice.

Good late night Matzah Ball Soup

As a person who makes Matzah ball soup from scratch, I am selective. I find that Jerry's and Canter's serve mushy noodles. Canter's Matzah ball was hard, and had no flavor. Greenblatt's, on the other hand, tasted really homemade. The brisket dip was nice and satisfying too. The place isn't a bargain but it tastes a step up from other delis.

Pros
+ Matzah ball soup, open late

The BEST quality... hands down!

Okay... If you don't want to pay top dollar for the high quality food at Greenblatt's, there are thousands of other places to get a deli sandwich in Los Angeles but IMHO, you get what you pay for. The quality here is 2nd to none. I lived in L.A. for 10 years and always make a point of making it to Greenblatt's when I visit. The #5 combo is to die for... I can taste it right now! ...get it with their awesome potato salad. They have a great wine and beer selection and also the deserts will make you want to take something home as well.

Pros
+ Awesome Food, Great Wine & Beer Selection

Cons
- The stairs are a death trap even if you've had NO alcohol!

Best Deli in L.A. Hands Down

If you're someone who appreciates top quality pastrami or corned beef - just stop here. Just give up your search and surrender to the best sandwich you'll find on the West Coast. I'm partial to the corned beef on rye with swiss. If I'm really hungry I'll add a bowl of matzo ball soup. Wash it down with a Dr. Brown's cream soda. My husband and I like to go here after seeing a movie at the Arclight - it's our low key date night. There's a convenient parking lot behind the restaurant and generally a short wait for a table. The booths downstairs are great for people-watching as the front door is right on the Strip so all kinds stop in for a bite. There's also a well stocked wine store downstairs and a refrigerated section with ready-to-eat dishes and desserts you can take home. I see the manager/owner here 90% of the time - he really cares about this place.

Pros
+ Delicious Deli Meats, Fast and Friendly Servers, Parking Lot

Cons
- I've seen three different people fall down the stairs - be careful!

Matzo Ball Soup at its Best!

Greenblatts is my first stop at the early signs of a cold for their incredible matzo ball soup. It has one giant matzo ball that is the perfect consistency with a generous amount of chicken and vegetables as well. Their sandwich menu can be intimidating, but typically the more complicated, the better. I usually opt for one of their specialty sandwiches like the turkey pastrami on rye that comes with Russian dressing, coleslaw and swiss cheese (instead of just a turkey sandwich that is relatively dry due to the lack of condiments). Greenblatts also boasts an impressive alcohol selection with tons of different wines and hard-to-find liquor all at reasonable prices. It's a great place to drop in for lunch or dinner (especially since they're open until 2am), but also very convenient for pick-up on a rainy afternoon.

Pros
+ Matzo ball soup, Tossed salad, Specialty sandwiches, Beverage selection, Helpful staff

Cons
- No grilled sandwich, soup combination (grilled cheese is best to dip in soup!)

Best Tuna Melt in Town/THE WORLD

I like Canter's as much as the next gal, but the food at Greenblatt's is truly superior. Plus, you can get a really great deal on a good bottle of wine. I have to recommend the kreplach, the salads, the kugel, and any of the myriad delicious desserts (cheesecake is to die for) but the star here is the tuna melt. I am a tuna melt aficionada, and this is probably the best one I've ever had (I get it on rosemary bread with tomato and aged cheddar). If I could make love to a sandwich, I would.
Two quibbles: I don't think that it's really "one dollar sign" cheap, Citysearch. You'll drop at least $10 for any sandwich on the menu, and sides are extra. They're all totally worth it, but where are the fries? A sandwich shop needs fries!

Pros
+ Tuna Melt, amazing winelist, dessert

Cons
- No fries, sides extra, kinda pricey

Greenblatts is one of the oldest Los Angeles classic restaurants. It is a great deli, easily the rival of something that you might find in New York City. There is a huge selection of sandwiches, wine, spirits and dessert. Greenblats has both delivery and carryout. It's open late into the night and early in the morning. In an emergency, you can do Thanksgiving or a BBQ for Independence Day, Memorial Day or Labor Day in 15 minutes...I have.
