Fancy dining and middle-age dance club

I came here last weekend with some friends for a fancy dinner to celebrate nothing, and it was pretty cool. Sutra is fairly fancy upscale American food - fancy $25-40 per entree steak/fish place with a high-price/not-so-much food steez.

The waitress wore a short skirt, but after she mentioned she had a 20-pound cat and had photos of it on her phone, she refused/ignored my repeated requests to show me the photos. This is not the kind of service I expect from a high-end dining establishment like this - it wasn't like I was going to stalk her or do anything creepy. I just wanted to see the 20-pound cat, which would have been the highlight of my night after finding out the cute English girl that came along with us for dinner was going to get married in a few weeks (rightonbro is a sucker for English accents).

This place turns into a nightclub when it gets late, so we got kicked out of our table after dinner because we decided not to opt for the $300 bottle (for mid-level stuff like Absolut) service. Age range here varied widely, including 40s or perhaps maybe 30s who didn't age so well. I am not the clubbing type so I can't really comment on the quality of the club except to say there were lots of people there and the music seemed contemporary enough.

Hmmm. Worth trying for you, me personally would not return.

Not Impressed

This was my first time at Sutra on a Thursday night.......our group consisted of 5 girls and 2 guys.....and we know a promoter so we got to pass up the long line and waltzed right in. My first impression was that it was a lot smaller than I expected but it seemed ok, boy was i wrong. So.....i cant complain about the drinks.....because they are pretty strong.......but like I said it doesnt hurt to know a promoter. Anyway the place is extremely cramped......and the dancefloor is tiny. Not to mention the music and the people........geez.......i felt like i had just flashed back to highschool. Honestly I really cant imagine what this place looks like with the lights on........because something smelled horrible. We saw Paris Hilton and Benji Madden.......and underager Ryan Scheckler........but since when is that a reason to go to a crappy club. After two drinks we ended up going across the street to a dive bar.....which was surprisingly a better experience. If you want to have an amazing clubbing experience make the trek up to LA.....

Pros
+ decent drinks

Cons
- everything else......

Great Place to have Birthday Party

After reading so many not so pleasant reviews on this particular lounge, but I had no choice to book it because all the LA clubs were all booked that night and I need a place to celebrate my birthday. Anyway, so I had my birthday party at Sutra on Saturday. I have to say it was a busy night with long lines, but my guests and I didn't have to wait in line because we've reserved a table. The bouncer and VIP host were very friendly to myself and my guests. VIP host got me a table just right next to the bar where I could see everything going on at Sutra. Our waitress was so nice and helpful to our party. She kept coming once in a while and asked us if we need anything. Oh, forgot to mention, they even gave me a "gatekeeper" for my table. And the guy was so funny, too. I had a blast at Sutra that night. Service was excellent! Music was great! People were hot! I will definately go back again soon.

Pros
+ Great place for party of 10+ and Great service

Bouncer has a small wee wee

Let me start off by saying that I am in the entertainment industry. I had been to Sutra in the past but only when I or one of my companies have rented out the entire building for photo shoots or tv release parties. This is the one and only good thing about Sutra. It has nice decor.
I went to Sutra the other day to write a review on the club. I had two beautiful females with me. I'm am a pretty hot female myself. One of the girls was there to shoot photos for a website and the other just to have fun. When we got there there was no line and we were on the list. The lovely bouncer out front with flame tattoos on his face immediately started hassling us and refusing to let us in. Even after I told him that we were there to work and were willing to pay the cover he still would not let us in. Even his boss told him to let us in and he refused. Apparently this ogar with with the intelligence of a fourth grader had more pride then to let three beautiful woman into their club.

Pros
+ Getting to look underage girls get into clubs

Cons
- Everything

Great time all around

After researching extensively online great spots to go for dining and dancing, a friend and I settled on the Sutra lounge despite its horrible reviews. My girlfriend and I are both in our late 30's but KNOW how to party like a rock star but at the same time demonstrate class. So our experience starts as we walk into the sutra lounge at around 9:50 pm there was no line and no cover charge but we were told that they have stopped serving meals so we thought we were not going to be able to eat. as we walk in the atmosphere was calming, there was no one on the dance floor (yet) and we proceeded to look for a place to sit. We walked up to two bouncers standing near the patio and asked where we could sit. One of them (David aka "D") proceded to escort us to the patio area outside for seating. We inquired again about food being served and he said that the kitchen is closing down but we can order appetizers since its not a big meal. He also proceded to find us a waitress who was VERY friendly, and who also took very good care of us. we did in fact order 2 appetizers that tasted great (a little over priced) and drinks. The entire time during our meal we had other waitresses AND bouncers come by and ask if we were okay and if we needed anything just ask. After we finished our meal, David escorted us to a table by the dance floor and told the bouncer covering that area to keep an eye on us and our table if we get up to dance. The place did get packed but that says that its a good place to be, because if there was nobody at the club then people would say its a dud. The music was great (No techno, thank goodness). Some of the guys were snooty but for the most part I danced all night. My friend and I were NOT on any VIP list , did not have reservations and did not order bottle service (although next time we will) and we were still treated like VIP. David the bouncer treated us like we were his family.

Pros
+ GREAT SERVICE, Good music, professional employees

Cons
- Food is overpriced

Bartenders Perpetrate Credit Card Fraud

I really don't know where to begin. After being dragged to Triangle Square late on a Saturday night, and after surveying the crowd, I knew this night was going to end badly. After receiving a blessing from 30'something bouncer man we were in, that is after we ante'd up $20 a piece to cash register girl. First impression inside: dirty. The place was easily 100% over capacity. Not only could you not dance, you could not walk or even stand in one place- imagine a really bad rap concert, in a really poor attempt at a vegas club, stocked full of people you would never associate with in the sober daytime. Ok, here's where it gets rich. So, I'm with three girls and myself, we walk to what I think is the least crwoded bar (on the patio), and try to order drinks. There on two windows, one on right, one on left. I stand at the left window and try to make eye contact with bartender. Look, this reviewer has been a bartender and knows how this mess of drunks, begging for drinks is supposed to operate. After being passed over for three customers (who got to the window after me, elapsed time, 10 minutes), one of the ladies I was with managed to get his attention and ordered. After pouring two of the four drinks she had asked for, she asked again for the other two. Bartender gets all frazzled and quickly pours the other drinks. Then she asks for a glass of water, he ignores her. She says, "I guess I don't get any water!" He yells, "hey, you'd get it faster if you asked correctly the first time. Needless to say, at this moment he lost his tip...or did he? I paid with my AMEX ($40 for two White Russians & two Vodka Redbulls!) and under tip wrote SCREW YOU. I was angry, we ended up leaving within 45 minutes and I thought that was that. Upon checking my credit card statement I noticed that my overpriced four cocktails for $40 was magically $50 on my AMEX statement. I have yet to resolve this issue, but I will keep you posted.

Pros
+ When compared to other clubs, I don't know of any Pros

Cons
- Service, Price, Atmosphere, Size, etc.

Snooty, snobby, mean, cattle heard

I guess I have to select a star, but I give this place No stars - this place should be shut down.

My husband and I had one of the worst experiences of our lives at this snooty place. When we finally got to the front of the line the bouncer/id-checker was quite unpleasant. He never once smiled or even looked us in the eye. We had to pay $20 each - cash-no less (they won't accept credit or atm cards)- to get in.

I ordered a virgin bloody mary and found that they don't have tobasco sauce (??), weird. Anyway we saw a nice couch behind the bar and sat down. Not one minute later did some snooty b**t** tell us that we had to leave because "this is the VIP area." There was no sign indicating so. Why isn't a "VIP area" in the back anyway? We left the couch without incident and struggled to get to the dance floor. I've never been pushed and shoved so much! If felt like one in a heard of cattle. The dance floor was so packed that it would have been impossible to get on.
We struggled back towards the front door (and only door) to leave, and my husband did something I consider unnecessary and dumb-dropped his half-empty beer bottle at the feet of the b*t* from the VIP room. There was a verbal altercation with a bouncer (which I couldn't hear over the loud music) and instead of letting us walk out as we were doing already, two bouncers forcefully dragged him out. They wouldn't let him go for a distance, then pushed him away (he has an existing shoulder injury/deformation).
Yes, he did something stupid, I agree, but the punishment did not fit the crime.

If you're a nice person,. don't go. I'd hate to think what would happen to you if there was a fire in there. I'm sure the fire department would be interested to find out how may people they pack in there...

Pros
+ none

Cons
- the worst club I've ever been in

Bouige club, no love for rastaman

My rastafarian bf was a designated driver for a birthday celebration with some friends along with the birthday girl on Thursday night, 4/12/07. The birthday girl had made reservation and VIP lists for her guests in advance. When they arrived, the doorman was intimidated by my bf's dreadlocks & dreadbeards, so he wouldn't let them in & wouldn't bother to check the VIP list for their names! My bf asked the doorman to look up his name on the VIP list but he was ignored. The doorman said the birthday girl can come in with only 1 free guest and the rest had to pay 1/2 price. Instead of letting the birthday girl choose which one of her guest, the doorman chosed a white dude who's not even in the group! My bf blurted out, "this is a rac%st club!" Then a white girl, probably the daughter of the owner, said, "no, its not" and grabbed her black bf & kissed him. Their exchanged words escaladed to where the white girl started cussing, "get the f*@k out of my property!" Of course, my bf went off on her and the security doorman shooke his head & listened. Even if you're dressed for the occasion and you look like Bob Marley, Club Sutra will show you NO love.

Wow! I just read that last review and I have actually heard the same bad reviews from friends who have been there. They say the club is not worth the money at all and if anything go on a night where admission is free to see for myself. Guys I know who have been there (and are hot as HELL) told me that the club is full of fake gold diggers and l@me guys who are trying to be tuff. Oh and that the majority of the club was on some kind of dr*g. My friends were offered coke several times by woman while they were there. I guess coke came back in a big way out here huh...YUCK!

Avoid At ALL Costs

I have been all over OC and LA. I have to say that this place is the lamest club I have ever been to. I used to work there as well and they treat their employee's like SH!T. The owner is a JOKE. He is almost 40 and they still call him Dougey, like a 12 year old. He got all his money from his dad, definately not self made. He reminds me of "The Bosses Son", a little spoiled brat who has had everything handed to him. The servers and cocktail waitresses are stuck up and snobby, thinking because they work at "Sutra" and are hott that they can treat people like sh!t. NONE of them know the menu at all and the bussers and food runners do all of the work for them while they freshen up their make-up in the back and talk about the daily gossip. The managers are a joke! The dance floor $ucks, there is only one entrance and it's way too small for people to be dancing in. They play the same Hip-Hop and Rap every night. It's those one h!t wonder groups like Little John and all those retarded songs. The bouncers are very rude and none of them speak English. If you don't have a table or part of "The Socail Group", don't bother going, it's a waste of time. "The Social Group" are a bunch of spoiled OC Kids, thinking they are too cool to get to know somebody new. I am a good-looking guy and so are my friends, so you know it has nothing to do with looks. I hate that place and everyone in it! NEVER GO TO SUTRA!!! - I know for a FACT that the managers put in false Reviews, I told them about all the crappy reviews and showed them the print out and that's what they said they were going to do. What A Joke, instead of making it better, they lie and try to hide it. DON'T GO!!!

Just as everyone says... totally overrated.

Went dancing at Sutra on a Saturday night not too long ago. Not much dancing actually took place due to the postage stamp sized dance area. To be fair, I only remember waiting maybe 45 minutes to get in as we got their pretty early (and it was just my bf and I). The layout of this club, location of the bar, bathrooms and VIP areas makes it extremely difficult to navigate once you're inside if there's even just a moderate crowd. I didn't find the service particularly rude, but they weren't exactly welcoming either. Anyway, eventually, when the place just got too packed to even find a spot to stand and not have to move every five seconds as people pushed past you, we left. (Maybe 11?) It's alright. I'm sure it's "the scene" for certain OC types, but for all of the reviews that said "something interesting happens every night" I was pretty bored.

Pros
