I can no longer go since the owner donated to the
anti-gay Yes on Prop 8.

My loss and they don't get my 15 bucks!

Pros

Cons

Why in the world would anyone come here for Mexican food!? It's cheap, sure, but other than that this place doesn't have much to offer.

It may have been my luck, but my server was terrible! She failed to bring me the correct check TWICE and overcharged us. I've yet to try the margaritas though...

All in all, avoid this place and head down to where the real tacos are (may I suggest King Taco or El Taurino!?)

Pros
+ None, really.

Cons
- Mediocre Food, unfriendly staff, weird decorations

mexican food from hell

I like Mexican food and love margaritas so I find myself going to a Mexican joint at least once a week. I pretty much stick to my usual culprits El Carmen (though that place is being ruined by its rediscovery by the "trendy crowd," in LA -- dbags and girls starving for attention), El Compadre, Don Antonios and sometimes Gilbert's by SMC. Anyway on this eventful night, El Carmen was a complete and utter s*** show, overcrowded with exactly the type of people nightmares are made of. So we decided to try El Coyote, a Mexican place on Beverly Blvd. that has been there forever. I figured, "This place has to be good right?" For f***'s sake it had a 75th anniversary sign on the wall and the valet parking lot was PACKED like always. In retrospect, I now believe it is one of life's biggest mysteries why that place survived one year let alone 75. 75 f***ing years! Most of us won't live 75 years.

The bottom line is this place is weird, almost eerie. If you had blind-folded me and put me in the middle of the restaurant I would've sworn it was a Coco's or the coffee shop in a Howard Johnson in Montana. This opinion would have been based on the utterly strange decor and the bizarre people eating there. I can't entirely explain it but if you want to see what I mean play a new game this weekend: give a friend a couple of shots of tequila, blindfold them, take them to the middle of El Coyote and ask them where they are. I guarantee 9 times out of 10 they will think they are in a Coco's or the coffee shop of a Howard Johnson. (No, the shots of tequila have nothing to do with this game.)

And I haven't even spoken about the food. It is cheap as f***ng hell which may be the reason why it has lasted so long, but you pay for what you get. I really shouldn't have expected quality Mexican food. El Coyote is one of those places that serves EVERYTHING. In addition to "Mexican" food it has an American menu and serves burgers and fries. When you choose your sides, you get the option of rice or beans or SPAGHETTI. I mean, really? That is just a huge red flag...

Anyway. I almost feel bad writing this because they obviously try hard and have for a while but the place stinks so who cares. 75 years of bad food, strange decor and bizarre ambiance. It is truly a mystery and one we must band together to fight against -- we cannot be brainwashed anymore. Mexican restaurant from hell.

How in God's name does this place stay in business?

So we go out to eat. My girlfriend is bent on going to El Coyote. I love Mexican food, but wasn't really feeling like it that night, so I tried to suggest other places. My girlfriend was insistent, so I gave in, I can eat Mexican food in my sleep, so no big deal. We get there and place is pretty packed. Seemed like a nice enough place. We got a table right away. Chips and salsa are fine, we order. I order steak picado, my girlfriend orders arroz con pollo. I look around, people seem to be having good time, I'm getting hungry and before I know it food is on the table. The food comes on plastic brown plates, kind of like hospital plates. The tortillas come with sticks of butter, kind of like hospital butter. I look at the food, and I look again, the presentation was horrible. It was as if someone took a meat clever and cut up both meats into cubes and chunks. Because thats what we had, cubes and chunks of meat, with dry rice and clumpy beans. Fine, i've eaten food that didn't look so good, that has tasted good. The taste was bland and as bad as the presentation looked. Just amazingly bad. We ate what we could and got out of there. Luckily the prices were cheap, we spent 20 bucks. We would've been better off at taco bell, seriously. As we walked to the car a couple stopped us and asked how El Coyote was. I told them it was terrible. They looked shocked. I assured them and told them to try some other restaurant, any other restaurant. I held up my to go box and said i'm giving this to my dog. But that didn't even happen, because when i got home, under good light, i looked at the chicken and I saw that it was grayish green. I threw it away. I drove by there the other night and the parking lot was full. I can't figure that out. No doubt it was awful food, but try it for yourself. See if you can understand how so many people can enjoy such lousy food.

Pros
+ decent environment, sort of

Cons
- terrible food. TERRIBLE!

I have been to this legendary restaurant twice. Both times the food was inedible. I think their most used kitchen item must be a can opener. I have to give credit to the party atmosphere, which is stellar. And I don't drink, so I can't say personally, but my friends say their margaritas are excellent. So, if you're looking for a party place to drink with friends, I would recommend it. But, if you want good Mexican food, RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN from this place.

El Coyote missed a golden opportunity for redemption

As a long time patron of El Coyote, I was starting to feel a tinge of forgiveness for the establishment, especially after some of their employees made certain donations in support of the Gay Community. But when co-owner Marjorie REINFORCED her views during a press conference just last week, and blatantly rejected that same community's civil rights, she blew a golden opportunity for redemption. If she really claims to have love for her patrons, she needs to think before blindly following the orders given to her by her church. Claiming to "Love" someone does not involve taking away their opportunity for love. Complete removal of Marjorie may be the only step now towards attempting to heal the wounds she has inflicted.

To all of you boycotting this restaurant because you have a difference of opinion politically, how would you like it if the shoe were on the other foot? What if Proposition 8 supporters boycotted business that support gay marriage? Do you see anyone on the Prop 8 side doing that? Since when is it American to try to destroy the livelihood of people you disagree with? Let's debate the issues rather than prevent them from feeding their families. This restaurant has always employed homosexuals. Does that enter your mind when you accuse them of homophobia? Please. Let's debate the policy on the basis of it's merits and respectfully disagree. These tactics can be used by both sides and then where would we all end up?

Pros
+ Support this restaurant regardless of your position on Prop 8. Show you DON'T support bullying by either side.

Worst Mexican Food in L.A. by Marvin D. at InsiderPages

I had been told El Coyote was a landmark not to be missed. My wife and I eagerly drove down Beverly to be ushered into (unwanted) valet parking. The decor was appalling but we thought maybe the food made up for it. We were shocked that what we were served is considered good Mexican food. It was some of the most dreadful, canned, greasy slop I have every been served. With so many rich, abundant resources available in a place like L.A. why would they resort to using canned peas in their food? Plus, we found we had to share our booth with a cockroach who crawled across the wall above our table. Top that off with rude service, plus the fact we both had to run to the bathroom at 2:00 in the morning to puke everything up, we saw little to recommend to anyone.

YUCK...MEXI-MORMAN FOOD TASTES LIKE INTOLLERANCE!!!

I was planning a big dessert party on November 4th at El Coyote and was shocked by how limiting the menu was.

Living in California for most of my life, I am used to menus filled with choices and options, but they said they only served churros and donuts for dessert and that everyone had to have 1 churro and 1 donut. When I asked that the let people in my group choose their dessert combo in case they wanted 2 churros or 2 donuts or some unique combo of churros and donuts to be shared by a few people, I was sternly told that was forbidden.

The manager explained that she ran a traditional Mexi-Mormon kitchen and was fuming as she ranted about how unnatural it is to serve 2 churros or 2 donuts together without a churro. She said the only variation they permit is their Big Love dessert platter arrangement of one churro surrounded by as many donuts as we wanted.

I tried to explain that this wouldn't do because while I am a traditional cook in my own home, I love that people have the courage to openly embrace new tastes and food combinations and that I know many people who seem very happy and content having 2 churros or 2 donuts. Once she started to rail on me at what an abomination such combinations are and how important it is to maintain traditional cooking rule, I knew this restaurant wasn't for me.

Just because El Coyote's traditional menu is popular in its Utah locations, doesn't mean it should dictate the same selection to its other locations throughout the country!

Pros
+ NONE!

Cons
- Intollerant, homophobic ownership
