My wife and I came to the pet store to purchase a puppy. After much consideration, we were torn on whether or not to get one because we already had another dog and were afraid they wouldn't get along. Joel approached us to help and had mentioned that we can take it home and if they didn't get along, we had a day or two to return it. That sealed the deal and we got the puppy, and left with it at 7:00pm, right as they closed.

By the time we returned home, our dog was too tired to play so we decided to wait till the next day. After observing them the next day we realized that what we thought was them being playful was not, so we decided to return the puppy. By then it was too late so I decided that the next day, Sunday morning, I would take it back first thing when they opened.

I was there right as they opened their doors and met with a sales clerk that was very rude and the manager/owner Ira who took the puppy back but kept $150. This was after I kept all of the food products I purchased from them because I didn't think it was fair that they should be stuck with opened food.

I was told I can talk to Joel on Sunday the 16th, I showed up but he wasn't there. I finally got a hold of him on Tuesday the 18th. He refused every saying one or two days and says only told us 24hrs. He told me that the state law states that its only 24 hours and that the $150 was for vet fees and paperwork, mind you I returned an unused certificate for a vet visit that they could have used and it costs pennies to print out forms.

I had to call many pet stores and animal control to find out that there is no such law before he finally offered store credit which I refuse because I cannot do business with this store after the horrible customer service they offered. I told him that $150 store credit + vet fees + paperwork fees would add up to the same as giving me $150 +vet/

Want someone who knows animals and cares? by Deborah M. at InsiderPages

Only pet store I've ever been in where they really know animals. Puppies are there for only a couple of days (and they are really expensive). But if you want pet advice and every product you can think of--they have it or will order it. This is not a corporate type store--but a , well, a PET STORE.

I shop at Peggy Wood's

I bought my bunny and my dog from Peggy Wood's P.E. I also have met other people who have bought their dogs there. My pets are very healthy with great personalities. I got my dog as a purebread puppy that came with all of her shots and worming and a pedigree that goes back several years including champions. They have kids that come in every day to walk the puppies that I think is great because it helps them to socialize and get used to walking. I have been going there for several years and the staff and owner have always been kind and knowledable.

Pros
+ knowledgeable staff

Cons
- havent found magical pill to make dog poo not smell

THIS STORE SMELLS SO BAD!!!

Went shopping with my friends and stopped by Peggy Woods because we were in the area and wanted to see the animals. I have never in my life been in such a horrible store. The place smelled so bad I could not be in there for more then 10 mins. It mad me sad to go into that store and see the animals who have to stay in that smelly room all day and night. Thought going to this store was going to be a happy time seeing the animals. Not the case. =(

I agree with the other comment ......adopt an animal for your local shelter do not buy a dog from a pet store!!!!

BUYER BEWARE: Great Fish and Aquarium Guy, Horrible Ownership! by Deirdre H. at InsiderPages

BUYER BEWARE!

It started out as an innocent attempt to control the algae growth in my 10g tank. I was advised to purchase a $15 plecostomus (common algae eater) and that if he was too big, I'd be able to return him for store credit. Please be advised that I have a 75g full tank setup ($1100.00) on layaway and I've been to this place a number of times, at least enough for me to be a familiar face.

Long story short, I attempt to return the pleco today. Granted, it's been a few days, but, he's too big and he's making my other fish stressed. I walk into the store, everyone was agreeable after I explained that nothing is wrong with the fish, but, that he's just too big. A few minutes later woman comes to the counter and fills out the store credit form for $2. I asked her if that was a mistake. She was rude and told me that the owner would never give me full credit. I was stunned.

I ask for my fish back and told Sean, the awesome aquarium specialist, the story. He takes me to Ira, the owner, who proceeds to bully me into trading the pleco out for a fish of lesser value ($10) and then practically pushes me out the door. I lost $5 in the whole deal, and now have a fish that I don't even want.

This is all really sad, as this is truly the best pet store in town, that is if you don't want to go to crappy Petco. The aquariums are well kept and Sean is really knowledgable.

WoW -- Rip-Off Artists by Jeff H. at InsiderPages

My wife bought a plecostomus (an algae eater) the other day at Peggy Woods Pet Emporium. It was an odd purchase from the beginning, as the employee really pushed this one particular fish on her. She explained repeatedly that she felt the fish was going to be a little bit big, but Harry reassured her that this was the correct size. Besides, Harry said, if it turned out to be too big, she could just return it and get the $15.00 price for the fish refunded. It wouldn't be any problem.

Much to no one's surprise, the fish did turn out to be too big. My wife brought it back to the store, they understood completely, and then they wrote her up a store credit slip for $2.00.

Obviously, she was pretty surprised. What happened to the full refund? It was explained that the owner would never give that much credit.

After much discussion, it was concluded that she would be given another fish -- and the owner duly picked out at $10.00 fish for her, put it in a bag, and practically pushed her out the door.

Nice, huh?

Puppy Mill Misery

It's hard to imagine that a store exists in 2008 that sells puppies. Pet Emporium just like practically every other store that sells puppies obtains their merchandise from puppy mills...factory-like breeding facilities that keep their breeding dogs in filthy, cramped cages where they are bred until they die or are destroyed. And their puppies very often have a variety of serious health problems.

Don't let Pet Emporium fool you into thinking they're an independent business and the exception. There's no way they can have access to stock at any given time without purchasing from puppy mills. The sick puppies they sell and non AKC papers prove it. The AKC puts a limit on how many times a dog can be bred. Their puppies are not AKC because they come from parents that have been bred over and over.

Makes you wonder what kind of human beings would continue to sell puppies knowing the misery they come from, especially considering the millions of dogs that are lying in shelters on death row. Who would call man's best friend stock? Peggy Woods, that's who. You may have noticed her cheesy signs advertising her holiday stock or the sickening way the dogs are handled.

Please be kind and consider adoption. You'll save yourself money and heartache...and save a life. There are shelters all over LA with purebred dogs and breed specific rescues for every breed you can think of. These dogs are examined by legitimate veterinarians and odds are they're not from puppy mills. Another good place to find a puppy or adult dog is online at petfinder. They list thousands of dogs up for adoption in LA. Let's put puppy mills out of business for good. Then Peggy will just have to start selling her fish for thousands of dollars.

It's hard to imagine that a store exists in 2008 that sells puppies. Pet Emporium just like all the other stores that sell puppies get their "merchandise" from puppy mills...mass breeding facilities that keep their breeding dogs in wire cages where they are bred until they die or are destroyed. And their puppies very often have a variety of serious health problems.

Don't let Pet Emporium fool you into thinking they buy from private breeders and are the exception. No responsible, humane breeders would ever sell to a pet store.

Makes you wonder what kind of human beings would continue to sell puppies knowing the misery they come from, especially considering the millions of dogs that are lying in shelters on death row. Who would call man's best friend "stock?" Peggy Woods, that's who. You may have noticed her cheesy signs advertising her holiday "stock" or the sickening way the dogs are handled. Yes, something she should be really proud to have her name on.

Please have a heart and consider adoption. There are shelters all over LA with purebred dogs and breed specific rescues for every breed you can think of. Having an undersized, sickly maltese, yorkie or chihuahua to carry around in your purse or an overpriced pug or bulldog does not give you status, it just means you're selfish and heartless. AND PAPERS LITERALLY MEAN SQUAT. The AKC and all these other "CLUBS" sell papers to puppy mills and backyard breeders, that's how they make their money. So save yourself a lot of money and save a life!

This is a nice store but to have a discount on new puppies makes me sick considering how much they must mark up the puppies from there original price. How can you price a Chihuahua or any of the other puppies for $2000.00, the same price as a Maltese, which is still high compared to anything else you might see on the internet or private party. I agree with the other comments noted and should really take to heart is this in the best interest of the pets or the greedy owners. The way they handle the animals reminds me of how the kids would throw there stuffed animal around the room.

If you're looking for a large variety of pets, especially fish and reptiles, and pet supplies & accessories, then shop at Peggy Woods. You'll spend at least an hour in the store looking at all the animals. The employees are very knowledgeable as well as friendly and helpful. If anyone will have what you are looking for its at Peggy's. The prices are great and if they dont have it, they will order it for you. The store is clean and the pets are very well taken care of. Parking is sometimes a problem, but even if you have to walk a bit, the trip is worth it.

PROS: Variety, large quantities, low prices
