beautiful hotel, badly managed

housekeeping was sloppy, I had to change rooms three times in one day because 1) air conditioning didn't work, 2) electrical outlet didn't work... it's a shame because it's a great location, but the management practices are better at a Motel Six... what a horrible waste

Pros
+ young attractive staff

Cons

Best Restaurant in Town

It's been months since I visited the Driskill, but upon perusing CitySearch, I noticed they have a relatively low rating at the moment so I thought I'd throw my two cents in. I went with family and friends as a special treat and the only way I can describe it is "perfect." We all chose the tasting menu (as was recommended), and every single thing that was in front of me was delicious. The wines were paired excellently. One of my family members was in town from Manhattan, and she is quite the foodie. She ranked the Driskill right up there with the best and most famous restaurants in New York. The meal was perfectly timed, leaving enough room in between courses but not so long that we felt that we were "waiting," and the service was attentive but not intrusive. Everything was cooked flawlessly and the atmosphere was wonderful. The dining room is on the small side, so there's no normal restaurant din. Overall, just perfect! It IS an expensive restaurant, but it was worth every cent. I wish I had the bucks to go there every night!

Pros
+ Service Service Service!

Cons
- Pricey (but worth it)

AC was not working...called up the front desk...and they wanted to fix the issue over the phone...was "instructing" us how to fix it....I attempted twice what he asked me to do...yet no success....then they sent the guy over...n sure there was some problem...he said it is now fixed....took half the night for the room to cool down....

When you charge $$$ for a room...atleast make sure everything is working....

Rest all was great..decor, views, n break fast at the restaurent...

If the ac issue was not there n the front desk more helpful... i would have given it 5 star

Pros
+ Decor, views, restaurent

Cons
- AC was not working

Great Cinnamon Roll and Illy coffee

Just wanted to try a new place for a pastry and espresso. The cinnamon roll is actually out of croissant dough-- at least it tastes that way. Yummy! And Illy coffee is always a nice treat. If you are going to dish out a few bucks at the chain across the street... Don't. Just fork out a dollar or two more and get something made in house at the 1886 Bakery!

Pros
+ Nice quiet, reserved, and beautiful interior character

I used to live over in the Brazos lofts across the street from this place. I loved the food, but I never will go back because of the repeatly rude service. Maybe because I am young and appear to not have " money" the servers where awful. If you eat here take it to go!

Beautiful historic hotel in superb location

We booked several rooms for UT graduation and were thrilled we choose someplace special. The front bellhop, valet service was efficient and friendly. The front desk staff was courteous and helpful. Trenton, the concierge, was doing a great job balancing several people at one time. He gave us great suggestions and was quite helpful. The bathroom lighting is dreadful, and I agree with a previous reviewer one has to go over by the window to put on make-up. The rooms are smallish, but they're lovely. I don't care for in-room coffee makers, having been a flight attendant and knowing some people wash their pantyhose, etc., in in-room coffeemakers. They hotel is beautifully decorated for Christmas, and the discreet presence of security was reassuring. The Capitol is close-by and a nice walk.

Pros
+ Great location and ambience

Cons
- Price, bathroom lighting

Awful Service on my WEDDING night!

My new husband and I arrived at the Driskill in a horse and carriage. I was in my wedding gown and he in his tuxedo. We walked passed 3 door attendants and no one offered to help us with our luggage. I guess your not important if you don't get married at the Driskill. STRIKE ONE

My husband had dropped off our bags and our party clothes earlier that afternoon. We had reserved VIP and bottle service at one of our favorite bars for us and our guests after the wedding. THE DRISKILL LOST OUR LUGGAGE FOR OVER AN HOUR!!!!! We didn't get our luggage until really late and barely made it to the bar before it closed. STRIKE TWO

My sister paid for the room as a wedding gift. She also paid for a welcome basket and breakfast in the cafe. Of course, we didn't get either. STRIKE THREE

If we had been staying here on vacation I wouldn't have minded or gone out of my way to blog. But this was our wedding night!!!!! It was a once in a lifetime experience and the Driskill did nothing to make it special, memorable, or even accomodating.

The hotel itself was beautiful but I have had better service at La Quinta!!!!!!!

Pros
+ location

Cons
- service

Disappointing stay

I just returned home from for my disappointing 30th birthday stay at the Driskill. First, our room was tiny - the bed comprised nearly the entire room - and the air conditioning obnoxiously loud. Second, the lighting in the bathroom was awful - I had to apply make-up by the window - and there was no soap in the shower. Next, my boyfriend had a detailed conversation with the lead concierge three times about where he should take me for a formal dinner. My boyfriend used the word "upscale" to describe the restaurant he would like. After first suggesting a place that was closed, the concierge sent us to a loud restaurant full of people in jeans eating ice cream sundaes. Huh? I looked ridiculously out of place in a dress and nice shoes. Furthermore, the two common sundry items I forgot - dental floss and ibuprofen - were not available at the front desk or anywhere in the hotel. If it hadn't been for the price of this hotel, I would have overlooked some of this. You simply do not get what you pay for. I suggest spending time in the lobby if you would like to visit the Driskill.

If you are into history, particularly Texas history, this is the place for you! Historic building, in the middle of the 6th street party district. Excellent amenities and service throughout the hotel. My only issue is that some of the rooms still look like the old days. History is interesting, however, i just want to look at it, not live in it.

disappointed

We booked a room with a king bed and got 2 doubles they said they only had so many kings.
But they booked a reservation for a king and did let us know they were not available
when we could have changed our mind.
It took 3 tries to get the room key to work--the room was very small no morning coffee maker
We will go back to the DoubleTree or Omni rather than stay here again
Not worth the money

Pros
+ none really

Cons
- over-priced impersoanl service

Not worth it... Bad Experience

One of my friends just moved to Austin and I cam intown to see him. He wanted to go somewhere nice so we went to Driskill. It is located in a Hotel that is absolutely gorgeous. The restaurant is really stuffy though. They had a great wine list. And the incourage you to order a three course meal the is $65 dollars per person. You choose one meal from each course list. The serving are so small you may need a magnifying glass to see them, and the food truly just wasnt that great. There were 5 of us a the table and not one of us liked the food. It wasnt worth the price. I really want put off by the price until I tasted the food and it totally wasnt worth it. Especially considering we were not even full when we left. The presentation wasnt even appealing. The service was ok but the staff sortof sticks up thier nose as if they are better then everyone. Its very uncomfortable. The next day on the other hand, we went to S. Congress Cafe which was absolutley awesome! The food was amazing, the drinks were different and pretty and the service was great! And I only spent $20. I would pass on The Driskill guys.

Lack of consistensy, slow service.

My first time in the restaurant was about 3 months ago, it was a good experience, good food, good service.
This time around we sat and wait for about 10 mins until a waiter came an greeted us. Then my friend ordered a cocktail while I waited for the wine list, I ordered the wine, they brought the wine back and they still didn't serve the cocktail until we asked a second time for the drink. Then we ordered the meal, the appetizer Ahi Tuna had a very weird kind of old taste... then the Lobster Bisque was warm, not "hot"... by then we had been sitting for One hour and 40 minutes ( 1:40hrs) when finally the entree was brought... needless to say I was hungry, tired and not happy with the food... we had to ask for the food to go....
I never experience such a slow service and poor food in a so called "excellent" restaurant. Never going back, specially with those prices, totally NOT worth it.

Pros
+ Classic setting, quiet

Cons
- Slow service, food is not consistant

Good, but not quite deserving its reputation

We found it good, but not living up to its reputation. The nine course tasting menu was varied, ranging from superb (lamb with mint tapioca) to excellent (smoked tuna and the beef tartare dishes) to strange and awful - the chorizo-covered shrimp not only seemed out of place, but was puzzling, as the chorizo totally overpowered the shrimp, and to add injury to insult the shrimp was very overcooked. Worst of all, the Driskill seems to take the "tasting" part of the tasting menu literally, as each course was minuscule, barely a bite or two. We were barely full after dessert. On the plus side, the chef was kind enough to send out a complimentary tenth course of short ribs, without which we would have gone home hungry, a sorry state of affairs when the nine course tasting menu for two costs $400.

The wine pairings also seemed not quite right at times... I'm not a big wine connoisseur, but at Zoot or Wink I'm usually impressed by how well the wines they picked go with the courses... here not so much.

The atmosphere was good, excepting the fire alarms going off in the middle of dinner, which I presume is not normal. While there was no siren it was sort of distracting to have the strobes blinking; it took many minutes to get them turned off.

The service was impeccable, though impersonal. This is a plus or minus, depending on whether you like your servers to have personality or not. We noticed some of the other servers seemed much more gregarious, so it was probably just our server as opposed to restaurant policy. There was one 15 minute period between courses in which we were foodless, but that may have been related to the fire alarm.

All in all, a mixed bag. If you go, I'd recommend ordering something you know is good, as opposed to gambling on the tasting menu.

Pros
+ Ambiance, service, some dishes

Cons

Gilded Age Splendor - And Lighting

The Driskill Hotel is down the road from the Texas State House (supposedly because it housed a 19th. century Gentleman's Club patronized by cattle barons). The building was saved from destruction and lovingly restored to its Victorian splendor, which unfortunately, despite the modern lighting still is a little dim, almost by gaslight. It is a truly remarkable building just to wander around with a lot of atmosphere and romance. The bar upstairs and the 1806 cafe are both lovely to look at and spend some time in. The hotel is conveniently located if you are exploring Austin by foot or car. It's a short walk to all of the live music, clubs and restaurants you could possibly want to see. I would definitely stay there again if I return to Austin.

Get your tastebuds ready!

Since I had heard such great things about the Driskill, I decided to go there for my birthday. In my opinion, this is some of the tastiest food in Austin! While the ambience is a bit stuffy and decorated in a fashion that is very antiquated, in my mind, the food is among the best there is. My husband and I each had the six-course menu, and every course tasted like heaven. Though I'd never heard of skate wing before, it was one of our courses (the courses are selected by the chef if you opt for the 6 or 9 course meal), and it was the most tender, delicious seafood I have ever tasted. Every course is a culinary experience in itself, and the only downside is that the "tasting" is so small that both my husband and I, who don't have big appetites, were a bit hungry when we got home. When we return, I will probably opt for a selection from the appetizer and entree menu, as those portions are not only bigger, but they allow you to really enjoy the dish you choose. I LOVED every single course that we ate. If you enjoy good food, and price isn't an obstacle, you will love the Driskill Grill. (Though I will forewarn you that the cheapest bottle of wine in the place was $30.00 and most wines averaged $60.00)

Pros
+ amazing food

Cons
- expensive, small portions on multiple course menu
