L.A. libraries are abundant sources of storytimes and activities. Most take part in the Grandparent and Books program, with a volunteer grandparent available to read (or listen) to kids after school: check local branches for details. Kids should check out the Kids' Home Page for homework help, recommended readings, and Net surfing tips; TeenWeb has more of the same for the older set.

The city rallied to save the library when arson nearly destroyed it in 1986; the triumphant restoration has returned much of its original splendor. Working in the early 1920s, architect Bertram G. Goodhue employed the Egyptian motifs and materials popularized by the discovery of King Tut's... more

I asked for a smoking room and all the smoking rooms are conceded the ?vintage rooms?. I liked the idea I was staying in the vintage side of the hotel for nostalgic reasons, but I was a bit concerned that it would be a scary ugly dirty room, but it was... more

This is more or less what you think of with downtown, older hotels. Pretty nice, but eclipsed by its more nicely renovated neighbors. The registration is a single step from slot machines. Steakhouse, buffet and coffee shop. Modestly priced rooms make it a good deal. Not glamerous.
