The Driskill

Gilded Age Splendor - And Lighting

Review Rating
The Driskill Hotel is down the road from the Texas State House (supposedly because it housed a 19th. century Gentleman's Club patronized by cattle barons). The building was saved from destruction and lovingly restored to its Victorian splendor, which unfortunately, despite the modern lighting still is a little dim, almost by gaslight. It is a truly remarkable building just to wander around with a lot of atmosphere and romance. The bar upstairs and the 1806 cafe are both lovely to look at and spend some time in. The hotel is conveniently located if you are exploring Austin by foot or car. It's a short walk to all of the live music, clubs and restaurants you could possibly want to see. I would definitely stay there again if I return to Austin.

The renovated all-day dining venue at the Driskill Hotel is steeped in a wonderful historical ambience, but it's the new desserts and modern sandwiches that beckon most. From an ethereal cheesecake to a decadent chocolate mousse cake to a unique chocolate tres leches cake, the 1886 sweets are scrumptious. What's not to love? It's historic, it's haunted, it's almost ridiculously beautiful. I can't say enough about how great the Driskill is.

What is best about the Driskill is it's history and uniqueness. Everytime I have stayed there I have heard or read another fasinating story relating to the hotel's history. And walking around in the hallways offers a museum like feel, with all the artwork beautifully displayed. I have to admit I am partial to the historic part of the hotel. I always feel important and special each time I... more

This is one of my favorite places to take clients for lunch. The staff is perfectly attentive without being intrusive. The atmosphere is simply classy. Whether you are in the mood for a simple salad or a three course meal, you will be able to find something devine on the menu. The Driskill Grill, I believe, is one of those little known gems in Austin.

OK, so this place is admittedly one of the cooler places to stay in Austin, but I really wish they're raise the roof (literally) a bit in that lobby bar. I feel like I'm caught in an elevator while I'm trying to enjoy my drink. Too claustrophobic for me.

The bathrooms are great, though. Actual cloth towels, early Texana dioramas and the sports page tacked above the urinal. Class!

The Driskill is a historic luxury hotel built in 1886. It's been refurbished and offers an elegant stay in a prime location. Sixth street and the capitol building are within walking distance. Driskill: worth staying once and eating many times

This IS a unique hotel. We found the staff very helpful, courteous (which you normally expect of a Texan, anyway) and the bar and restaurants, excellent. We received the newspapers of our choice, free; we read the NY Times, and it came complete, not abbreviated, and the Austin paper, each morning at our door. We asked for information about a specific restaurant, and instead received a... more

In ShortThe Driskill Hotel was built in 1886 by cattle baron Col. Jesse Driskill. The downtown hotel has become something of a tradition for Texas governors; it has hosted several inaugural balls. The lobby awes visitors with grandeur, while guests and locals sip cocktails at the piano bar. The rooms in the original hotel and the ones in the newer Driskill Tower are romantically and richly... more

2 of my friends and I went down to Austin for a girls night out. We stayed at the Driskill in the newer tower on the 12th floor. Took my husband on a breakfast date before he had a meeting. Our first time inside the Driskill after moving here and hearing so much about it. Several waitstaff blew by us; one managed to say she would be right with us. It didn't appear to be busy. Once finally seated, it took a while to get coffee and tea in stained china (baking soda easily takes off the brown stuff). Two other parties... more

I've been to the Driskill before and it's a great historic hotel, with wonderful rooms and a charming bar. But what really stands out for me was when I accidentally left my ring in the room.
