Sushi Ike

secret locals sushi bar

Review Rating
This is authentic sushi. Not a huge hitlist of California-cuisine rolls, but the freshest fish I've ever had. Order the sweet shrimp; it's the best in L.A. Great service, good food, wonderful chefs and staff - don't let the strip mall parking lot fool you. :o) Or, rather - do let it. With under 10 tables in this place, I'm happy to keep it to myself!

Business Description from the Web

The twenty-year-old establishment serves simple, traditional fish dishes in the heart of Hollywood.

Sushi Ikes signature grilled octopus with lemons will win over the hesitant and the squirmy. Make reservations and expect parking to be near impossible. But as soon as a bite of halibut hits the tongue, all will be forgotten. Afterwards, run across the street and take in a show at the Henry Fonda Theatre.

Tips About This Business

Parking

brought to you by

Citysearch

In addition to the onsite parking lot, free one-hour street parking is available on Hollywood, east of Gower, but it's restricted after 9pm on weekends and 1:30am on weekdays. Read signs carefully if parking late.

I love this little gem on Gower and Hollywood. Try the medium Toro tuna sushi. Mmmmm Good. It is run by the owner so you know it is clean and the fish is always fresh. Nice clean little restaurant. Try the Albacore with their custom sauce. Really nice treat.
Parking is a bit tight at times during lunch but at dinner it is never an issue.

Used to be a huge fan of this place but recently had a horrible experience. The sushi is always great. However, I was charged $50 for one order of grilled octopus, one order of salmon sashimi, and one order of cut roll toro. I know the octopus is expensive but come on. I have been there many times and had twice as much for the same price. I didn't even order alcohol this time. It used to be a... more

This restaurant is 'icky' on the outside but nice on the inside. The basic sushi was excellent, and our vegetable tempura was also fine. But, my personal favorite, the 'spicy tuna handroll' was about 1/2 the size of the usual serving and nothing special inside. Because it was so small and the same price as elsewhere, this became even more expensive sushi meal than usual for us. The only... more

I have been going to ike now for about 3 year. If you go, please sit at the bar, even if you have to wait. Then order salmon two ways which is one seared and one fresh. the seared one must be eaten right away when given to you since it has to be consumed warm. AMAZING! my other favorites are the crab handrolls, kanpachi, tai and toro...

This place is my favorite sushi spot in LA. Its also about the most authentic. It is located in a strip mall in Hollywood, so I would have never expected to find a great sushi place there! But it is absolutely outstanding.

Pros

+ Awesome, authentic sushi. Great service. Small restaurant feeling.

Cons

- Parking can be a challenge. Be patient! Its worth it!

I've been dining at Ike Sushi for close to twenty years, and in that time I've enjoyed some amazing Japanese cuisine and good times thanks to Ike's attention to craft and customer. But of late I must say that I agree with the author of "Rude Treatment". Ike's hospitality seems forced and his fellow sushi chefs apply an unspoken pressure to keep ordering or call for the check. When my mom, who is very Japanese and a restaurant owner herself, told me that Ike Sushi was the best sushi restaurant in L.A., I was very anxious to try it. She told me that we had to get there around 5:30pm since it gets crowded quickly. When I saw that it was in a busy mini-mall in Hollywood, I was more than a little skeptical. The location isn't hip, trendy or anything you'd expect from the... more

This is one restaurant I will not be returning to. While the sushi is good, the owner has managed to treat me in such a way which prevents me from returning. I'm writing this because I want to warn people about this restaurant. My wife and I went to this restaurant the other night and we were served the worst piece of mackerel I've ever tasted. I have heard many raves about Ike Sushi, including right here at Cityspace, that I can't wait to get over there. The person who reviewed on 9/16/06 clearly has no business crossing the threshold of a simple sushi venue. Stick to Sushi Dan (ugh!) for your "rolls" and your tempura (which does not travel well -- are you surprised?) If you acted as bratty, spoiled and rude in their establishment... more

Yuck! Place smells bad. Tiny little aging dive in a cruddy strip mall, but okay, we'll try it. This is a great place, with the sushi always crafted with such care. The fish pieces are so nicely cut with slight variation depending on the type of fish. Fresh and uncluttered. In my enthusiasm and good will toward this restaurant, I *must* say this is a good sushi spot, but I'm greedy and don't want this place to become some new "hot spot" because low key, no pretension, fresh fish is tough to come by in this town. This is not fancy. No beautiful people here. No fusion either. Just good, fresh fish. For my taste - I couldn't ask for more.

Ike is good sushi, but it's not a 10. Nowhere that serves imitation crab in their California Rolls can really earn a top score.
