I visited on a Sunday afternoon. The place was moderately busy and the aroma was enticing. I ordered the brisket platter, which comes with 2 sides and cornbread or toast. The food arrived quickly. My sides were coleslaw and beans. The cornbread would definitely be better if it was warm, but otherwise it was good cornbread - the less-sweet southern...

We have been here a couple of times because we love bbq. They have a drink called the PDX that is delicious! Our complaint here is that we think it is overpriced for what you get. Unless you order a full rack of ribs, the portions are very small. The sandwiches are tiny and underwhelming. That being said, the dinner...

I read reviews for Russell Street and was very excited to try it. I stopped in and ordered the baby back ribs with a side of collard greens and macroni. I go to the "Q" for lunch at least every couple of months when I have a craving for good ol' fashioned Southern BBQ. Best BBQ in Portland

Average Rating

This is the best BBQ in Portland. And they do a vegetarian BBQ entry too. The whole place is full of good cheer, too. Not the usual tired and run-down atmosphere you often find at BBQ places. So most people eat it there, don't take it out.

Being residents of North Carolina, a friend suggested we go to lunch at Russell St BBQ to see how it compares. Hush Puppies w/jalapeno honey sauce. Sweet Tea. Ranch Beans. Slaw. Pulled Pork. Ribs. Chicken. Yum. Decor is checkered tablecloths and pigs. Service is fast and friendly. Music is usually Austin-style countrified. Daily specials are always worth a try. Parking is the only hassle as Russell St can get crowded...especially on weekends.

Great Barbercue. Superior service from helpful, courteous and speedy staff. Informal atmosphere and basic decor quite appropriate for delicious hush puppies appetizer followed by excellent chicken and ribs plates. We worth the trip!

Best BBQ in Portland - Still!

Average Rating
80

I've tried all of the barbecue places in Portland, and still think Russell St. Is the best. There is often a wait for a table, but once seated, the service is always friendly and prompt.

The beef ribs are incredible, with a little char, and plenty of beefy flavor. The baby backs are quite good too, really meaty with little bones. The brisket is moist and flavorful, even though I don't love it chopped. The hot BBQ sauce had plenty of zing, but is nicely balanced, and not as thin and vinegary as many of our other local places.

The sides may be the best thing about this place. ...

Average Rating

So Russell Street BBQ isn't horrible by any means but not sure what all the hype is about. This place is packed at lunch and sometimes at night but it is only OK. My only guess is that people who frequent this spot have never had good bbq or they go their for convenience.

Southern cooking is in trouble here

Very disappointed by the food. Cornbread dry, cole slaw heavy, macaroni and cheese dry, and the greens were an unusual soupy watery, not fresh made greens. My kids usually like corn bread and cole slaw. But did not touch it here. Hush puppies were dry, not a little creamy inside and crispy outside. They charge soo much for not very good food. They're making a killing with crappy food.
We got full rack of baby back for $31.00 and a plate of beek ribs for $16.00 with 2 other side(very small) dishes for $2.50 each and hush puppies for $5.00 a basket. Total with tip $51.00 plus tip. And left...

I have heard many times this was a great BBQ restaurant. The service was above average, but not much more. Though the prices were reasonable, we were overall severely underwhelmed with the food . \r

The pulled pork though tender had very little smoke flavor and no smoke rings. The sauce used on it was very one dimensional and even the spicy sauce had very little kick. The side dishes which included their ""signature mac n cheese was grainy and very bland. The meaty beans were even worse, tasting like canned beans with some meat scraps added. \r

It was one of the worst bbq i had, because it wasn't real bbq. Meat tasted like it came out of the electric oven. Portlanders who doesn't know what real bbq is don't know it I guess, as long as it's flavored with hickory pellets and liquid smoke in a GAS-fired oven? It's like someone from Northwest who tries to copy online recipes of southern cuising without ever lived there. I wouldn't recommend this place unless it was last resort. Service was taking too long, and it was not worth it.
