This is great barbecue
The barbecue is great - pork, chicken, even tofu! - and the heat level is up to you. The baby back ribs are incredible, and the sides, especially the collard greens and mac & cheese, are really well done. Go there!

FANTASTIC Souther BBQ
THis is real souther BBQ in the NW. Only place better in the area is my back yard. The Sweet tea is Fantastic and I am not one to go for the sweetening in my tea but here I make an exception. Have brought friends here and all have enjoyed. Make the trip!!

Awesome BBQ and Great Service
We were here this past week with our three young kids. This place has a great atmosphere, great food and friendly fast service. The kids were given fake tattoos which was a plus. I had the baby back ribs and my wife had the beef brisket. Both were excellent. The kids meals were also very good. We'll definitely be back.

Great alternative to the famous Toro Bravo restaurant across the street. This is where we ended up not wanting to wait for almost two hours at Toro Bravo. You wI'll not be disappointed. Great BBQ !! Great sandwiches. Ribs looked god too.

Great place to eat. A favorite. BBQ sauce was great. Meats were just right. Portions were nice. Sorbet for desert was really good. Great drink selection including Hot Lips Berry sodas made locally. I'll go back often when in Portland.

Good Barbeque and Service
We stopped in for supper and really enjoyed their pulled pork. Nice selection of sides including really yummy coleslaw and tasty barbeque. Mac and cheese was also delicious. Beer selection was also good. Good prompt service and although we had to wait for a table during prime dinner time, we got one in about 10 minutes.
Best BBQ in PDX
I've lived in the Carolinas where pulled pork is king, so I know my BBQ. Russell Street BBQ is refreshing and delicious! Get a side of Mac n' cheese with your pulled pork and your taste buds will thank you!
Best BBQ in Portland
This is the best BBQ in Portland. And they do a vegetarian BBQ entry too. The whole place is full of good cheer, too. Not the usual tired and run-down atmosphere you often find at BBQ places. So most people eat it there, don't take it out.
Finger licking good
We enjoy the ribs, beef brisket and pulled pork and can have it all with our dairy, wheat and soy free diet, even the mustard and vinegar sauces. The side of fries also fit the bill and are great, we usually double up on these and grab a beer or two for a great meal.

Parking can be an issue buit the BBQ isn't. I like that they dont drown the meat in sauce. They have a salad with the meat of your choice that is excellent. I get take out from this place often. YUM!

This is a well-run, relatively inexpensive bbq place which is very efficiently run. Love the decor. I am not a big bbq fan but their hughe salads with bbq pork or chicken shredded on top are excellent as is the corn bread. Godd, small outdoor area for the few days of summer in OR.

Beware: the hush puppies and sweet tea are addictive
Hush Puppies w/jalapeno honey sauce. Sweet Tea. Ranch Beans. Slaw. Pulled Pork. Ribs. Chicken. Yum. Decor is checkered tablecloths and pigs. Service is fast and friendly. Music is usually Austin-style countrified. Daily specials are always worth a try. Parking is the only hassle as Russell St can get crowded...especially on weekends.

Great barbecue, great atmosphere
The BBQ was excellent and the staff very accommodating. I like to try the variety of sauces a BBQ restaurant offers and they happily obliged bringing me their basic pork baby back ribs and their selection of sauces. All were very good but the mustard and spicy sauces were the best (for my tastes).

Russell Street Bar B Que has the best Bar B Que this side of the Mississippi.
I wouldn't go as far to say as the best bbq I've had but it ranks up there. I highly recommend the pulled pork with slaw. And what's pretty incredible is they don't mess around with the fries, which are killer.

Best BBQ in Portland - Still!
I've tried all of the barbecue places in Portland, and still think Russell St. Is the best. There is often a wait for a table, but once seated, the service is always friendly and prompt.
The beef ribs are incredible, with a little char, and plenty of beefy flavor. The baby backs are quite good too, really meaty with little bones. The brisket is moist and flavorful, even though I don't love it chopped. The hot BBQ sauce had plenty of zing, but is nicely balanced, and not as thin and vinegary as many of our other local places.

What is all the hype???
So Russell Street BBQ isn't horrible by any means but not sure what all the hype is about. This place is packed at lunch and sometimes at night but it is only OK. My only guess is that people who frequent this spot have never had good bbq or they go their for convenience.

Southern cooking is in trouble here
Very disappointed by the food. Cornbread dry, cole slaw heavy, macaroni and cheese dry, and the greens were an unusual soupy watery, not fresh made greens. My kids usually like corn bread and cole slaw. But did not touch it here. Hush puppies were dry, not a little creamy inside and crispy outside. They charge soo much for not very good food. They're making a killing with crappy food.
We got full rack of baby back for $31.00 and a plate of beek ribs for $16.00 with 2 other side(very small) dishes for $2.50 each and hush puppies for $5.00 a basket. Total with tip $51.00 plus tip. And left...

Great Food
Sometimes I find myself thinking nonstop about this place. The urge to go back can ba all-consuming sometimes. The ONLY bad things I've ever experienced here are the difficulty finding parking and the wait that is required for seating (only because they're so busy). When I go, I must have their Stumptown Iced Coffee with Cinnamon. It's better than words can describe!

Not worth the price
It was one of the worst bbq i had, because it wasn't real bbq. Meat tasted like it came out of the electric oven. Portlanders who doesn't know what real bbq is don't know it I guess, as long as it's flavored with hickory pellets and liquid smoke in a GAS-fired oven? It's like someone from Northwest who tries to copy online recipes of southern cuising without ever lived there. I wouldn't recommend this place unless it was last resort. Service was taking too long, and it was not worth it.

This place is talented and wise enough to make bbq healthy and better than any I have ever eaten. The meats ans sauces were great. Just enough of everything, smoky, juicy, tasty, sweet, tangy and flavorful. Our waiter said try the brisket and it melts in your mouth. The potato salad will make you think ou are at a family picnic. Great food! I love it all, but have a real place in my heart for the brisket sandwich with slaw, or a chicken sandwich with pimento cheese. My favorite must have sides are: mac and cheese, greens, and beans! Kids get perfect sized portions, and love the mac and cheese. The cocktails are great, and they are always coming up with something new to try. My husband enjoys the beer selection, because there are so many great local beers on tap. I've been to this restaurant I guess 25+ times in the past year. It has always been consistently good. Everything from the brisket to the pulled pork sandwiches. I think they are very reasonably priced. It doesn't get any better than this..when you can go in..sit down to good music, good bbq, sweet tea and home cooked deserts. My brother, couple friends and I make a point to visit frequently. Two thumbs up.

I agree with some of the comments that it could use more hickory smoke flavor like some of the barbeque that I have had in the south, but overall I have enjoyed it very much in each of my return visits. Seriously, how did this place get 5 stars? The portions are small, the food is bland and the atmosphere is that of an upscale mcdonalds. The chicken was grey and the ribs were dull. Maybe I just had a rare bad experience, but nothing we saw on any of our plates made us want to come back. It just wasnt as good as everyone made it out to be.

I had the 'three meat' special but I chose no meat - just tofu, shrimp and salmon. For sides, I had coleslaw and greens, with cornbread and the Virginia classic sauce. Being a displaced Southerner, I had been overwhelmed by my co-workers and friends about Russell Street BBQ and it's greatness. Well, I ordered the 3 Meat Sampler (MeataPoolza) in which I got chicken, beef brisket, and pork ribs; plus, a side of cole slaw and beans with meat.\r
I placed my order and was informed I had to ""pick"" which style sauce I wanted on each piece of meat...WTF? Well, the chicken was received with no sauce and it was terribly overcooked; plus, the brisket had little/no sauce and there was no ""smoke"" about it at all...the pork ribs were ok, but could have endured...

On the way home from a long day of work we decided to order out from RUSSELL STREET BBQ. Hadn't eaten there for awhile and we were in a bad way. I love this place. The food is terrific. The ribs are juicy, tangy and meaty. The portions are a bit too large--which with ribs means they are perfect! I have eaten here three times and have loved it every time. The meats are wonderfully smoked, the sides are delicious, and the sauces compliment everything well. The grilled shrimp are without a doubt some of the best shrimp I have enjoyed from any type of restaurant. A must-try item. They have very nice, if sometimes brisk servers. I can only fault them on their beef brisket, which I found to be rather dry. That said, don't miss the other meats, they're wonderful!

We have made this place one of our regular haunts, thanks to the terrific food and the consistency of the service. The ribs, mac and cheese, fries, and hush puppies are our favorites, but we (or our guests) have also tried the chicken, pork, and even the BBQ tofu, and all were excellent. \r
We've never had a bad meal, although once my partner's ribs arrived on the cold side. The staff were very apologetic, fixed the problem promptly, and took his meal off the bill. Many places wouldn't go this far to please their customers.\r
